history

Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Rosario

With a royal resolution of April 11, 1747, the place was raised to the category of a municipality and a district called Santa Cruz de Aracati , whose headquarters was Porto dos Bracos . The real installation as a community came about on February 10, 1748, after the first city council was selected. In the 18th century the community had about 2000 inhabitants (1779).

In 1761 the construction of the mother church Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Rosário began, which was only completed in the 19th century.

In 1829 it was proposed to move the seat of the General Council of the Province of Ceará to the Vila de Aracati, but this did not materialize.

Urban politics

Bismarck Costa Lima Pinheiro Maia des Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro (PTB) has exercised executive power for the 2017-2020 term since the local elections in Brazil in 2016 . The legislature rests with a city council ( câmara municipal ) made up of 24 elected representatives ( vereadores ) since 2017 .

The municipality has been divided into seven districts since 1995: Aracati, Barreiras dos Vianas, Cabreiro, Córrego dos Fernandes, Jirau, Mata Fresca and Santa Teresa.

economy

Since Aracati has little industry to speak of, there is high unemployment; accordingly, there is a constant emigration, especially of the younger and more educated population, to the economic metropolises of Brazil. However, Aracati functions as a regional trading center for the surrounding area. Tourism plays an increasingly important role, especially the seaside resorts belonging to the urban area such as Canoa Quebrada and Majorlandia are prosperous holiday resorts with a good infrastructure. The kilometer-long beaches of Canoa Quebradas, with their striking red sandstone cliffs, are a well-known travel destination.

Standard of living

The human development index for cities, abbreviated HDI (Portuguese: IDH-M ), was at the very low value of 0.371 in 1991, at the medium-high value of 0.523 in 2000 and at the medium-high value of 0.655 in 2010. In 2017, the average monthly income was 1.7 times the minimum income of R $ 880, which is around 332 euros per month for 2019.

The gross national product per capita in 2016 was R $ 16,595.

Attractions

In some streets of the center you can still find impressive colonial buildings, but they are mostly in a desolate condition. Several sacred buildings shape the city. The old market halls in the center are worth seeing. The morbid state provides an authentic picture of market life in Sertão, Brazil .

Bathing beaches are about 15 km away in the small former fishing village of Canoa Quebrada. The village offers a larger selection of smaller hotels (pousadas), as well as restaurants and smaller shops. The village nightlife is known beyond the borders of Aracati. The beaches of Canoa Quabradas are particularly popular on the weekends with the residents of the metropolis Fortaleza, which is around 150 km northwest. On the kilometer-long sandy beaches of Canoa Quebrada there are several beach bars and restaurants in a central location.

Culture

Aracati is known for its dissolute, excessive street carnival with the "Mela-Mela", in which the carnival revelers sprinkle each other with flour and water.

Transport links

There are bus connections to Fortaleza and Mossoró ( RN ) from the local bus station. The travel time to Fortaleza is around 2:30 hours.

Since August 4, 2012, the place has Aracati Airport , better known as Aeroporto de Aracati , the official name is Aeroporto Regional de Canoa Quebrada Dragão do Mar , accessible via the national road CE-123 .

Trivia

The first German portafilter coffee machine was named after the city of Aracati in the 1950s and successor machines still bear this name today.
