Sheikh Safi Mosque, Ardabil

Ardabil ( Persian استان اردبيل, Pronunciation: / ærdæˈbiːl /, Azerbaijani Ərdəbil ) is one of the 31 provinces of Iran . The capital is the city of the same name Ardabil .

In the province 1,270,420 people (2006 census) live in an area of ​​17,800 square kilometers; this corresponds to a population density of 71 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The province belonging to the Azerbaijan region is located in northwestern Iran on the border with the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea .
