The present city was laid out in 1856. Old documents show that on May 11, 1858 a meeting of the citizens determined the name Arlington for the place and the township.

Many German immigrants came to the region in the 1860s and 1870s. As a result, the city had a majority of German-born residents.

In 1948 Arlington was incorporated as Home Rule Charter City and separated from the township.
