Arnold Ipolyi (born Arnold Stummer ; born October 20, 1823 in Kosihy nad Ipľom , Okres Veľký Krtíš , Kingdom of Hungary ; † December 2, 1886 in Grosswardein ) was a Hungarian clergyman , historian and art historian .

Live and act

Arnold Ipolyi was educated in the Archdiocese of Gran , studied from 1836 to 1838 at the Collegium Emericianum in Pressburg , then in Tyrnau and then for four years theology at the Collegium Pazmanianum in Vienna . In 1844 he entered the seminary in Gran one, received in 1845 the minor orders and in 1847 for ordained priests . After that he was a teacher in the family of Baron Alajos Mednyánszky until 1847, afterwards he became curate of the Saint Peters Church in Komárom , 1848 preacher in Pressburg, 1849 teacher in the family of Count Lipót Ferdinánd Pálffy and then pastor in Zohor and in 1860 in Törökszentmiklós . In 1862 he traveled with the paleontologist Ferenc Kubinyi (1796–1874) and Imre Henszlmann to Constantinople , where they researched the parts of the Bibliotheca Corviniana of Matthias Corvinus that were stored there . In 1863 Ipolyi became canon of Eger and in 1869 director of the ecclesiastical seminary in Pest . From 1871 he was Bishop of Neusohl (Banská Bystrica) and from 1886 Bishop of Großwardein (Oradea).

In addition to his work as a clergyman, Arnold Ipolyi was particularly concerned with historical and art-historical topics. In 1854 he published his first work, Magyar mythologia ( Hungarian Mythology ), which was awarded a prize by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . However, he withdrew from further printing, and a second edition did not appear until 1929 after his death. In his other works he published biographies as well as historical and art historical considerations.

Arnold Ipolyi was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and from 1867 a member of the Kisfaludy Society . In the same year he was co-founder and first vice-president of the Hungarian Historical Society, later he became the third president after Imre Mikó and Mihály Horváth . From 1879 to 1885 he was President of the Hungarian Art Society.

In 1872 Ipolyi donated sixty paintings to the Landesgemäldegalerie, which had been relocated from the Szépművészeti Múzeum . He left his collections to build a museum in Oradea.
