Ashes of the Wake is the fourth studio album by the American metal band Lamb of God . It was released on September 27, 2004 via Epic Records . With this album, the band made it into the charts for the first time and reached number 27 in the US album charts . The album was awarded gold records in the USA and Canada .

Emergence

In the spring of 2004 the band began songwriting for the new album and recorded a self-produced and financed demo . A short time later, the band left their previous record label Prosthetic Records and signed with the major label Epic Records. Lamb of God chose “Machine” as producer , who had previously worked with bands like White Zombie and Pitchshifter .

“We're always trying to keep a little distance from other bands, and we thought that a producer who doesn't strictly work in metal would come up with some fresh ideas. And that's exactly what happened. "

The drums were recorded in the Water Music Studios in Hoboken , the rest in the Sound of Music studio in Richmond . Guest musicians were former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland and then former Testament guitarist Alex Skolnick . Both contributed a guitar solo for the theme song . Music videos were made for the songs "Laid to Rest" and "Now You've Got Something to Die For". The Japanese version of the album includes the song "An Extra Nail for Your Coffin" as a bonus.

In contrast to the previous albums, the lyrics of the album are of a political nature and deal, among other things, with the Iraq war . The band questions the necessity of the conflict.

"" We have these rich white men in suits playing risk with the lives of 18 year olds dying over there [Iraq]. It looks like we're getting closer to our own downfall. ""

- Mark Morton

The theme song contains excerpts from an interview with former US soldier Jimmy Massey, in which Massey reports on his experiences in the Iraq war. "Omertà" deals with the mafia members ' duty of the same name to remain silent about the members and machinations of the organization.

reception

Ashes of the Wake received positive reviews from the trade press. The online magazine Ultimate Guitar rated Ashes of the Wake 9.1 out of ten points. The reviewer described the work as an "excellent album, which can compete with the works of Pantera " and praised the "impressive guitar work" and the "delicate drumming". Adrien Bergrand from the online magazine popmatters described Ashes of the Wake as "a big breakthrough that American metal has brought".

On the other hand, Matthias Weckmann from Metal Hammer criticized that “not all riffs ignite because the band is too often and too long in the mid-tempo range” and awarded five out of seven points. The album was rated negatively by the online magazine Sputnikmusic , which criticizes the similarity of the songs and accuses the musicians of not using their talent.

Ashes of the Wake reached number 27 on the US album charts, which also marked the band's first chart entry for an album. In the first week after its release, the album sold 35,324 times. By the time the follow-up album Sacrament was released in August 2006, Ashes of the Wake had sold over 260,000 units in the US. In June 2012 the album received a gold record in Canada and in February 2016 in the USA. The album received a silver record in July 2020 in the United Kingdom.

Republication

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the album, an anniversary edition of the album will be released on May 3, 2019. The new edition will be released as a double LP with four bonus tracks. In addition to the B-side Another Nail for Your Coffin , the re-release includes demo versions of the songs Laid to Rest , Ashes of the Wake and Remorse Is for the Dead .
