Lamb of God -

Lamb of God is the ninth studio album by the American metal band Lamb of God . It was released on June 19, 2020 in Europe via Nuclear Blast and in North America via Epic Records .

Emergence

Apart from the cover album Legion: XX , which was released in 2018, the band allowed themselves the longest break between two studio albums. In addition to the cover album, the reason for the long break was that Lamb of God accompanied the band Slayer on their farewell tours. According to singer Randy Blythe , his band came to compose stringently while touring. In October 2018, then drummer Chris Adler expressed the hope of releasing a new studio album by Christmas 2019. At that point, guitarist Willie Adler would have created a guitar riff file that would take over four and a half hours together. According to guitarist Mark Morton , the band already recorded a few demos in April 2019 . For this purpose, studios in Maine and Virginia Beach were visited.

In the spring and summer of 2019, the recording for the aforementioned North American tour in the opening act of Slayer as well as various festival appearances in North America and Europe were interrupted. The band announced the split from drummer Chris Adler in July 2019. His successor was Art Cruz , who had already jumped in for several concerts. The recordings continued after the tour in Studio 606 in Northridge , a borough of Los Angeles , and ended in late January 2020. The studio is owned by Dave Grohl , who once bought the Sound City Studio mixer for the studio, which was used to record albums by Nirvana , Fleetwood Mac , Tom Petty and Rage Against the Machine , among others . Josh Wilbur produced and mixed the album. Jamey Jasta from the band Hatebreed and Chuck Billy from the band Testament can be heard as guest vocalists . Music videos were shot for the songs Checkmate and Memento Mori .

publication

On April 10, 2020, together with the band Kreator the Split - Single 666 - World Divided / Checkmate published. Lamb of God contributed the song Checkmate , while Kreator recorded the new song 666 - World Divided exclusively for the single. The single was released as a limited 7 "single as well as digitally. Parallel to the album, Lamb of God launched the craft beer Ghost Walker in collaboration with the Scottish brewery BrewDog . It is the world's first non-alcoholic beer to be produced in collaboration with a brewery The album was originally due to be released on May 8, 2020. However, the release date has been postponed to June 19, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

The album cover shows a broken pocket watch which, according to Mark Morton, symbolizes the "lack of stability". Many of the songs on the album deal with "being attentive, living in the moment and respecting that everything can pass". Singer Randy Blythe added that all humans "have to wake up" if this planet and humanity are to be saved. The Corona crisis in spring 2020 showed that the common good would not have reached everyone's mind.

The fact that the album was named after the band, Blythe described as a statement. This album "would be Lamb of God, here and now". In terms of content, the entire album would be political . Not a single song would be about an individual person. Blythe said that in the past it would have been a lot easier to write on specific topics because of events like the Iraq war .

Decency and discourse are at an all-time low. People do n't see the parties for their program, but support them like sports clubs. The texts reflect this. The whole system is a single fraud. "

- Randy Blythe

Memento Mori was written by Randy Blythe as a reminder of yourself not to be consumed by the omnipresent electronic harbingers of doom - smartphones , computers , television . Blythe calls for you to break away from the screens as real life is waiting for you. The song Checkmate is about the United States' political system in general. He wants to show how criminal it is to finance the presidential candidates. Lobbyists would exert too much influence. Since the industrial revolution , humanity would have been re-educated into a consumer society , which led to the “misconception” that “possession makes you happy”.

Poison Dreams addresses the issue of environmental pollution from the chemical industry . Both Randy Blythe and guest singer Jamey Jasta once lived in areas where the water was polluted in this way. In Routes is about the protests against the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline . These were initiated by the Native Americans . For this reason Randy Blythe wanted one as a guest singer. The choice fell on Chuck Billy, a member of the Pomo .

reception

Reviews

Thomas Kupfer from the German magazine Rock Hard praised the nasty and technically always at the highest level riffs and solos of the congenial guitar duo Mark Morton and Willie Adler. Singer Randy Blythe distinguishes himself as a keen and astute observer of global developments and their downsides. Copper awarded nine out of ten points. Lothar Gerber from the German magazine Metal Hammer emphasized that "all the known trademarks of the band stand out" and the rhythm section "does an impeccable job". However, “the songs suffer from the high intensity”, which “does not allow good songs to emerge for a long time”. Gerber awarded 4.5 out of seven points.
