The Assaburg near Wülmersen in the north Hessian district of Kassel is 163.5  m above sea level. NHN high elevation of the western roofing of the Reinhardswald in the Reinhardswald estate . On the elevation lies the desert of Assaburg .

The Assaburg rises in the north-western part of the Reinhardswald estate. Its summit is 850 m (as the crow flies ) southeast of Wülmersen, a hamlet of Trendelburg with the Wülmersen moated castle . The Holzape flows first to the east and then north past the wooded Assaburg, which flows into the Diemel at Wülmersen to the west of the elevation . On this side of the Holzape in the south is the Brautstein ( 209.4  m ), and on the other side of the brook in the southeast is the Moosberg ( 185  m ).

Natural allocation

The Assaburg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group West Hessisches Bergland (No. 34) and in the main unit West Hessische Senke (343) to the subunit Hofgeismarer Rötsenke (343.4). Its landscape leads south and east into the main unit group Weser-Leine-Bergland (37) and the main unit Solling, Bramwald and Reinhardswald (370) belonging to the sub-unit Reinhardswald (370.4). From a geomorphological point of view, it belongs to the western roofing of the Reinhardswald.

Protected areas

Parts of the nature reserve (NSG) Holzapetal ( CDDA no. 81924; designated 1980; 89  hectares in size) nestle against the Assaburg to the southeast in the Holzapetal . The NSG is part of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area Holzapetal (FFH no. 4422-350; 2.54 km²). In the valley there are also parts of the landscape protection area (LSG) and parts of the landscape in the Hofgeismar district ( CDDA no. 378519; 1938; 28.42  km² ) and to the west in the Diemeltal those of the LSG Auenverbund Diemel (CDDA no. 378399; 1994; 13.29 km²) to the Assaburg.

Traffic and walking

A little to the west past the Assaburg runs near Wülmersen the federal road 83 , from which as the spur road crossing the Diemel the district road  74 leads southeast into the hamlet with the moated castle Wülmersen . For example, starting at the end of this road, the elevation can be hiked on mostly forest trails and paths. A common section of Märchenlandweg and Diemelradweg runs to the west past the elevation through Wülmersen in the Diemeltal on the former route of the Carlsbahn , and a few kilometers to the east is the Reinhardswald-Westweg hiking trail .
