August Friedrich Wilhelm Rudolph (born February 11, 1771 in Burgholzhausen , † June 15, 1826 in Zittau ) was a German educator.

Life

August Friedrich Wilhelm Rudolph was born as the son of Johann August Rudolph, pastor of Burgholzhausen. He taught him at home and prepared him for a visit to the grammar school in Weimar, which he attended from 1784 with the support of his mother's brother, businessman Christian Siegmund Rinder (1751–1829). His sub-principal at the Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium Weimar was Wilhelm Johann Christoph Lippold, the collaborator was a Christian. Rost, the secret chancellery Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Roth taught him writing and arithmetic, he received further lessons from Vice Rector Johann Gottlob Samuel Schwabe, Professor Johann Karl August Musäus , and after his death, from Johann Friedrich Kästner, from Rector Johann Michael Heinze , teacher of the French language was Schmidt, he also had lessons from the court dance master Johann Adam Aulhorn and drawing lessons from several teachers from Georg Melchior Kraus .

In 1790/1791 he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Jena and heard lectures from Johann Jakob Griesbach , Johann Christoph Döderlein , Lorenz Johann Daniel Suckow , Christian Gottfried Schütz , Heinrich Eberhard Gottlob Paulus and Carl Leonhard Reinhold .

Thanks to the support of his sponsor, Friedrich Wilhelm von Seebach, then cathedral dean and later cathedral provost of Naumburg , he came to the University of Wittenberg at Easter 1791, which he attended until 1793. He heard lectures from Franz Volkmar Reinhard , Friedrich Wilhelm Dresde , Johann Daniel Titius , Johann Matthias Schröckh , Johann Jacob Ebert , Konrad Gottlob Anton , Christian Friedrich von Matthäi , Johann Christian Henrici , Christian Friedrich Franke , Johann Georg Karl Klotzsch and Johann August Görenz .

Easter 1793 he received the Magister lib. art. and on June 11, 1794 he completed his habilitation as Magister legens ( acquired the right to hold lectures at a university through a public disputation ) and in November became adjunct of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Wittenberg, in 1796 he became university librarian and in 1798 he became dean of Appointed Philosophical Faculty.

On July 9, 1798, the city council of Zittau appointed him to succeed Karl Heinrich Sintenis (1744–1816) as rector of the local grammar school in Zittau , where he was appointed by the mayor Johann Friedrich Scholze (1735–1800) on November 13, 1798, who exercised the office of Oberscholarchen was introduced. At that time, the grammar school was transformed into a teaching facility that was intended exclusively to prepare students for university studies. For this purpose, August Friedrich Wilhelm Rudolph converted the two lower classes into a citizens' school. However, it was not until 1810, after difficult negotiations, that the state government ordered the separation and a “general city school” was founded. However, this redesign was not in the spirit of August Friedrich Wilhelm Rudolph and according to his ideas. Due to the excitement caused by this and the death of his first wife in 1808, traces of a disturbance in his mental health were already recognizable in 1809. These disturbances recurred again and again in shorter and longer periods of time, but did not prevent him from continuing his office or from his literary activity.

He also played a major role in the reform of the orphanage in 1814, and in 1817 he celebrated the 300th anniversary of the Reformation in a particularly festive manner in his grammar school.

In 1823, however, his health was so badly damaged that he applied for his retirement, which took place on July 30, 1823. In the period after his retirement his mental health improved, but his physical strength deteriorated, so that he died on June 15, 1826. His successor in the office of rector was Friedrich Lindemann .

August Friedrich Wilhelm Rudolph was married three times and outlived both his wives and most of his children.

Act

August Friedrich Wilhelm Rudolph was a staunch opponent of the method of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi , who is considered a forerunner of visual education and whose educational goal was holistic popular education, but in his opinion this leads to superficiality. He has taken this point of view several times in school programs, but he himself also tried to improve high school pedagogy and wrote the programs de iuvene ad vitam academicam maturo in 1799 and Observationes Platonicae in 1804 .

In 1806 he first introduced the public Easter exams.

Memberships

In 1799 he became a member of the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences .
