description

Former observation tower on the Finsterberg

The conical Großer Finsterberg, which is noticeably inclined to the west at the summit, shows its volcanic origin.

Except for the summit plateau, the mountain is completely forested with an almost pure wool - riding grass - spruce forest ; a shrub layer is largely eliminated. A special mountain meadow vegetation with Bärwurz , Waldehrenpreis and St. John's wort has developed on the plateau .

location

Minor peaks and boundaries

To the north-northeast, just one kilometer away, there is his little brother Kleiner Finsterberg or Finsterberger Köpfchen ( 875  m ). Two less spectacular eastern side peaks ( 728  m ) and ( 673  m ), 2 to 3 kilometers away, both bear the name Rosenkopf. In the west, northwest and north the Finsterberg is bordered by the Freibach and in the southeast by the Taubach , both source brooks of the Ilm .

Neighboring mountains

To the southwest, separated by the Rennsteig (approx. 800 m away), the Große Eisenberg ( 907  m ) is two kilometers away . To the north-west, four to five kilometers away, are the two only (main) peaks of the mountains towering over the Finsterberg, the Schneekopf ( 978  m ) and the Great Beerberg ( 983  m ).

history

Hard coal has been mined at Mordfleck (1.5 kilometers west of the summit) and at Blauer Stein (1 kilometer northwest) since the middle of the 18th century .

At the end of the Second World War , soldiers' graves were laid on the mountain. From 1954 to 1990 the summit of the Great Finsterberg was used for military purposes by the Soviet Union and was therefore a restricted military area.

Refuge on the Finsterberg

From 2001 to 2018 there was a wooden 7.85 m high observation tower on the summit of the Großer Finsterberg, with a view of the Kickelhahn , the Ringberg on the Adlersberg near Suhl , the Dolmar near Meiningen and the only two higher mountains in Thuringia - the Großer Beerberg ( 983  m ) and the Schneekopf ( 978  m ), below the summit of which the Schmücke could also be seen. The tower was demolished in 2018 due to dilapidation, but an 8 meter high new tower was erected in 2019, the design of a wood-clad and roofed steel structure similar to that of the Ilmenau Lindenberg . On the east side of the summit there is a small hut with another lookout point.
