action

The billionaire heir Clay Beresford has a relationship with the housekeeper Sam Lockwoord, but is unable to confess the liaison to his adored mother. Clay has a heart defect that can be life-threatening if a donor heart is not found soon. So he spontaneously marries his fiancée, who is increasingly annoyed about the secrecy, in a night-and-fog action and confronts his mother with this fact so that he has shown his true love in case he should die soon. Clay and his mother get into an argument. Then he gets the call that a donor heart has been found; then he goes to see Dr. Jack Harper, a doctor who already saved his life once and who then apparently became a friend to him, had a heart transplant.

Before the operation, Clay is anesthetized , but unexpectedly remains conscious during the procedure and notices what is happening around him. Clay discovers from conversations in the operating room that the medical team is planning his death. He emerges from his body, wanders around the hospital and further finds out that Sam is in league with the doctors. As a former employee of the hospital, she is in the lead in the plot. It turns out that Sam was after Clay's money from the start, as she would receive a quarter of his fortune if he died as a wife. Doctors manipulate the donor heart with an injection that is difficult to detect so that it appears afterwards as if his body has not accepted the heart.

When the doctors tell Clay's mother about the unsuccessful operation and want to get her approval to turn off the heart-lung machine , she discovers, thanks to her astute suspicion, that Sam was behind the murder plot. She informs her doctor friend, Dr. Jonathan Neyer about the situation and asks him hastily to perform another operation on her son.

After that call she commits by an overdose of tablets that had to take her son constantly, suicide to Clay through an organ of the same rare blood type to save the life. In the surreal dream sequences in between, mother and son talk for a long time and find each other again. Dr. Jonathan Neyer and his team of doctors take over the operation and implant Clay's heart into his dead mother. Meanwhile, the alarmed police show up at the clinic. Sam and the others involved in the murder plot try to escape, but are caught and arrested while they are still in the building.

Shortly before the end you see Dr. Jack Harper locked in his office while police and security wait for him at the door. He puts the syringe that Clay used on the desk.

In the last scene, Clay can be seen opening his eyes and waking up.

reception

The editorial team of Cinema judged: “The story implants a few improbabilities too many. Conclusion Herzlos: a deafeningly overloaded thriller. "

Jan Hamm von Filmstarts summed up: “Awake” is a total failure as a thriller and a drama at the same time. The tension potential of a heart transplant experienced first hand remains largely unused and the dramaturgical errors consistently ensure that the red thread is lost in the film. The metaphysical therapy session is then involuntarily funny. [...] What remains are pictures of beautiful people, polished to a high gloss. It is really not a worthy memorial for the victims of faulty anesthesia. "

Awards

Jessica Alba was nominated for a Golden Raspberry for worst actress and for worst film couple alongside Hayden Christensen .
