Ayasofya mosques ( Turkish Ayasofya Camii ; dt. Hagia Sophia mosque) are named after the Hagia Sophia , which was expanded after the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans, converted into a mosque and used as the "main mosque" of the Ottomans.

meaning

The Hagia Sophia (from the Greek Ἅγια Σοφία "Holy Wisdom") was in the 6th century n. Chr. Built the main church of the Byzantine Empire and religious center of Orthodoxy . After the Ottoman conquest (1453) it was converted into a mosque and is now a museum ( Ayasofya Müzesi , "Hagia Sophia Museum").

The dome of Hagia Sophia is the prototype for the dome construction of later mosques.
