Basalt columns on the Bärenstein |
The Bear Stone is 897.8 m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Ore Mountains . It is located about two kilometers north of the place of the same name Bärenstein in the Saxon Ore Mountains District . The mountain range is part of the Bärenstein nature reserve.
geology
As the remains of erosion from a former lava flow, like its neighbors Pöhlberg and Scheibenberg , both of which it towers above, it consists mainly of basalt . All three peaks are table mountains . On the north side there is an abandoned quarry, which shows the column formation of the basalt.
history
measurement
In the course of the Royal Saxon Triangulation , the Bärenstein was integrated into the measuring network and a second-order triangulation column was built on the summit in 1865. The column, overturned for years, was rebuilt in 2005 around 25 meters south of the original location. Due to the dense forest cover on the hilltop, it is no longer possible to see the neighboring stations on the Pöhlberg, Scheibenberg and Fichtelberg.
Tourist development
On the Bärenstein there is a circular summit path with several rewarding viewpoints and a mountain inn with a lookout tower. Efforts to erect a lookout tower by the Erzgebirgsverein Bärenstein go back to 1890. The Saxon Ministry of the Interior was initially opposed to these plans. In 1903 the construction of a refuge was approved and carried out. In 1911, permission was granted to build an accommodation house with a tower and the necessary construction of a road as well as the electricity and water pipes. The foundation stone for the building took place on May 1st, 1913 and the inauguration on November 30th, 1913 in connection with the 25th anniversary of the Bärenstein branch of the Erzgebirge . In 1936 the building was expanded by a hall and fundamentally renovated in 1992/93. In 2019 the mountain inn was closed due to a lack of staff.
On the Bärenstein a ski lift, toboggan slope and ski trails ensure good winter sports conditions.
The Stoneman Miriquidi , the most demanding mountain bike route in the Ore Mountains, runs over the mountain.
view
From the mountain inn's 30-meter-high observation tower, there is a view of the nearby Klínovec ( Keilberg ) and Fichtelberg . In the east the mountain falls steeply into the valley of the Pöhlbach, in the west the Cranzahl dam lies at the foot of the mountain. In the southeast, the view falls on the Mědník ( Kupferhübel ) and the ridges of the Bohemian Ore Mountains, in the north on the mountain town of Annaberg and the Pöhlberg .
