The name comes from the Middle High German buoch 'Buchenwald, Forst' and stands for someone who lives in a (beech) forest. Alternatively, people were named after the settlement name Buch (very often especially in Baden, Württemberg and Bavaria as well as in Austria and Switzerland), beeches (often in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, in Austria and Switzerland, historically also in the Czech Republic), Buchau (several times mainly in Bavaria, historically also in the Czech Republic and Poland), Buchenau (several times, mainly in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria, and historically in Poland) so called.
