The Baiersdorfermühle (colloquially: Bāiaschdofa Mül ) is a district of the city of Baiersdorf in the Central Franconian district of Erlangen-Höchstadt .

location

Kleinseebacher and Baiersdorfer Mühle, site plan 1816

The Baiersdorfermühle is located about one and a half kilometers southwest of Baiersdorf, on the right bank of the Regnitz at river kilometer 38.7 at the Baiersdorf weir. Opposite, at the other end of the weir, on the left bank, is the Kleinseebacher Mühle belonging to Möhrendorf . The two mills used to be connected by a wooden walkway, which was dismantled in autumn to protect against ice and floating debris and rebuilt in spring after the snow melted. The footbridge allowed horse-drawn vehicle traffic between Kleinseebach and Baiersdorf. The Mühlweg municipal road connects the mill with Baiersdorf.

A site plan from 1816 by Ambrosius von Amman shows the location of the Kleinseebacher mill on the left bank (above) and the Baiersdorfer mill opposite on the right bank (below).

history

The mill was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century. It was mentioned for the first time in 1458, but without a name. From the location “on the Rednitz [= Regnitz] located c to Beyrstorff” it can be concluded that it is the Baiersdorfermühle. In 1497 it was mentioned as "Brantzmul". It was named after the family name Brand , which is probably the name of the owner at the time. Since 1581 the form "Bairstorffer mull" is attested, which became the only one in use from the 18th century. The mill was in the Fraisch district of the Brandenburg-Bayreuth Oberamt Baiersdorf . In 1778 the mill had five grinding and one tanning stages. Then there was a newly built granulator , a two-tier house, a small courtyard house with an oven, stables and barn.

Under the Prussian administration (1792-1806) of the Principality of Bayreuth, the Baiersdorfermühle was given house number 179 in the town of Baiersdorf. The mill had its heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Wage Mill

The mill has belonged to the Koch family since 1855. It was used as a tinder mill to crush the vegetable tanning agents required for tannery , especially spruce and oak bark. At that time it comprised six grinding stages, a tanning stage for separating husks , and a cutting mill ( sawmill ). Customers were the red tanners from nearby Erlangen .

Roller mill

In 1898 the mill burned down. It was rebuilt by Christian Koch († 1918) as the "Automatic Roll Mill Baiersdorf Koch & Gellweiler" and was then one of the most modern roll mills . The partner Wilhelm Gellweiler, who joined in 1900, died in 1907. Since then, the mill has been the sole property of the Koch family again, who operated the commercial milling business. It has not been used since 1952 and was increasingly deteriorating. It was later acquired by Edmund Brockers, who renovated the house and used the mill building for mechanical engineering. Today the mill is privately owned.

River power plant

Today the water wheels are used in a river power station to generate electricity. The owner was Edmund Brockers, who was also the owner of the Baiersdorfer Mühle and the Kleinseebacher Mühle opposite. Four medium-sized water wheels were in use .

In 2006 the power plant was sold to Martin Bauer, who comprehensively modernized the plant and equipped it with an automatic control system. The water wheels have a diameter of about 6.5 meters and make 4 revolutions per minute. A gearbox increases the speed to 600 and a belt drive to 700 revolutions, sufficient to drive the power generator. Two water wheels each run together and together generate 90 kW with an efficiency of 55 to 60%.

A fish ladder was built in 2007 and expanded in 2011.

In 2010 a hydropower screw was installed. It generates 60 kW with an efficiency of 80 to 82%. During floods, the backwater of the water below the weir is so great that the water wheels no longer turn. That is why they stand still about four weeks a year. The water snail, on the other hand, runs continuously. The power plant delivers 180 kW / h on an annual average, the peak output is 240 kW / h. The energy generated is conducted over the river via an overhead line and fed into the power grid on the Möhrendorfer side.
