Ngô Bảo Châu , also cited BC Ngô or Ngô BC, (born June 28, 1972 in Hanoi ) is a Vietnamese-French mathematician who deals with number theory and automorphic forms. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 2010 and his proof of the fundamentals of the Langlands program was recognized by Time magazine as one of the ten most significant discoveries of the year in 2009.

Life

Ngô Bảo Châu is the son of Ngô Huy Can, a physicist at the Vietnamese National Mechanics Institute. His mathematical talent was noticed at an early age, when he was 15 he entered a special high school mathematics remedial class at the State University of Vietnam. He won two gold medals at the Mathematical Olympiads .

Ngô Bảo Châu came to France in 1990 on invitation and with a scholarship from the French cultural authorities and studied at the École normal supérieure (and the University of Paris VI ) from 1992 to 1995 . In 1997 he did his doctorate with Gérard Laumon at the University of Paris-South in Orsay ( Le Lemme fondamentale de Jacquet et Ye ). Then he was Chargé de Recherches of the CNRS at the University of Paris-Nord . After completing his habilitation in 2004, he was a professor at the University of Paris-Süd in Orsay. From 2006 he was also at the Institute for Advanced Study . For 2010 he accepted a professorship at the University of Chicago . In addition, he has been a Vietnamese professor since 2005 and has been Scientific Director of the newly founded Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics since 2011 .

In 2004 he received the Clay Research Award with Laumon. In 2006 he was invited speaker at the ICM ( Fibration de Hitchin et structure endoscopique de la formule de trace ). In 2007 he received the Oberwolfach Prize for his proof of the fundamental lemma conjecture (drawn up by Robert Langlands in 1979 and Diana Shelstad ), which is important in the Langlands program (to stabilize the trace formula ). Previously, he had proven a special case ( unitary groups ) with Laumon , for which both received the Clay Research Award . In 2007 he received the Sophie Germain Prize. In 2010 he received the Fields Medal and gave a plenary lecture at the ICM in Hyderabad (India) ( Endoscopy of automorphic forms ). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2012 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2016 to the Académie des sciences .

He is married and has three children.
