Baptiste Martin (born May 14, 1985 in Troyes ) is a French football player on the position of a defender who is mainly used in central defense .

Club career

Started at AJ Auxerre

Baptiste Martin, born in Troyes in 1985, took his first steps at a top French club not far from his hometown, where he was already active in local clubs, in the youth division of AJ Auxerre, about 80 kilometers away . He joined the Burgundian club in 1999 and was initially only active in the club's youth teams before he played his way up to the club's D team, which at that time was represented in the French sixth division. From this team he made the 2002/03 season quickly into the fifth-class playing C-team, in which he was active until the end of the season. Probably still part of the C-team in the following season, he also made it into the squad of the B-team with play in the CFA , the fourth-highest division in French football . This season, however, he was only used in a single league game and only came to his breakthrough in the team in 2004/05, when he had already made 22 goalless championship appearances. While legendary coach Guy Roux resigned his coaching position with the professionals at AJ Auxerre in the summer of 2005 after more than 44 years of coaching, Martin was still playing in the B team at this point and only made his professional debut under Roux's successor, Jacques Santini . He made his debut on August 6, 2005 in a 2-0 away win over AS Monaco , when he came on in the 43rd minute for the later French international and Liverpool player Bacary Sagna . This was followed by a few appearances as a substitute player, before he played his first game from the start and over the entire duration of the game (0-1 away defeat against OGC Nice ) on October 22nd . Then he came in the further course of the season to numerous other missions, partly as a substitute, but also as a regular and brought it to the end of the 2005/06 season on a total of 15 first division appearances . He was also in the squad of the professional team when they competed in the Supercup game against Olympique Lyon after their cup victory in the previous season . There, however, the team lost 4-1 to the successful squad from Lyon , who won this competition six times in a row from 2002 to 2007. Martin also made nine league appearances in the B team this season.

Hopelessness in Auxerre

In the following season 2006/07 Martin's stakes with the professionals decreased slightly and increased by a few games in the reserve team. Due to her relatively good placement in the final ranking of the 2005/06 season, AJ Auxerre was allowed to participate from the third round of the UI Cup 2006 and, as one of eleven winners of this round, also take part in the subsequent second qualifying round for the 2006/07 UEFA Cup , where the team was only eliminated from the current tournament in the group stage. Martin didn’t notice any of his club’s international appearances and by the end of the season had only eight appearances in Ligue 1 and 13 appearances in the fourth-class CFA. In the 2007/08 season , the stakes of the defensive player in the professional team continued to decrease, but he strengthened the B-team with increasing stakes. By the end of the season, where the AJ Auxerre could only position themselves in 15th place in the table, Martin had six championship appearances, of which he only played two over the full length of the game. In contrast, it looked different in the CFA, where he was able to prevail with 23 games and also contributed three goals. Due to the hopelessness that Baptiste Martin could assert himself in the professional team of AJ Auxerre, the leaders of the club decided to look for a club where the defender could collect match practice on a professional level. They finally found this in Clermont Foot , to which Martin moved on loan for the entire 2008/09 season. In the French second class , the right foot was finally able to assert itself at the professional level and was no longer dependent on assignments in fourth class amateur football. Through a total of 25 second division appearances, he came to a decent match practice this season, although he only brought the team to twelfth place in the sometimes quite dense table. During this season he also met his home club ES Troyes AC twice , against which he narrowly won twice with the club from Clermont-Ferrand . After returning from the center of France, the trained defensive player could no longer assert himself at his home club from Auxerre and was not used in a single league match by Jean Fernandez , under whom he was previously used in numerous professional games. Instead, he spent most of his time in the B team, where he mostly had to give way to the younger players and only made 14 championship appearances and one goal.

Transfer to Belgium

Due to the continued hopelessness of still getting a breakthrough at AJ Auxerre, Martin decided to leave the club at the end of the 2009/10 season and then signed a two-year professional contract with KV Kortrijk from the Belgian First Division in May 2010 . But here, too, he sometimes had to struggle with a form weakness and, whether initially wanted, could not really act as a core force. After his debut in the third round match against VV St. Truiden (2-0 home win), he was already in action for the full duration of the game, and afterwards he also played numerous games over the entire duration of the game. Among other things, he was used on October 2, 2010 in a 3-1 victory over AS Eupen , in which he was sent off in the 72nd minute after a supposedly gross foul with the red card. After a negotiation by the gaming committee, the latter set up a suspension for Martin from two league games, which the player, however, fought. After a further inspection of television pictures and photos, it turned out that the defender had wrongly received the red card, which is why he was acquitted again. After that, the Frenchman was only used again in January 2011, where he initially still acted as a regular and also gave an assist in a 2-1 home win over Standard Liège , but from the 24th round only played as a substitute and either left or right was substituted on. Nevertheless, in the season finale in the 2-2 derby demis against SV Zulte Waregem, he scored the first professional league goal in his career when he met with an early 2-1 win after Mustapha Oussalah presented him . With the team, he finally ended the season in tenth place in the table. In the later Europa League playoff, in which the team participated in April and May 2011, he could not prove himself with the team, although he was used in almost all games of his team and only had to pause one game due to an injury.

After 21 league appearances and one goal in the 2010/11 season , the Frenchman became a regular in his club's defensive line in 2011/12 . He made 28 appearances in the regular season, as well as another nine appearances in the championship finals. In both periods of the season he was not successful as a goalscorer for his team, but scored one goal each for the opposing team. He also scored an own goal in the Belgian Football Cup of the 2011/12 season when he made it with the team to the final of the tournament. There they lost to Sporting Lokeren by a late goal from Tunisian Hamdi Harbaoui , who scored the 1-0 winner in the 77th minute of the game. Due to his performance as a regular employee, his contract, which expired in the summer, was extended for a further three years until the summer of 2015. In the 2012/13 season , the 1.86 cm defensive line also appeared as a regular in the back of his team. He brought it to 27 missions in the regular season, in which one reached a comfortable place in the middle of the table, as well as four missions and an own goal in the middle play-offs. As in the previous year, they almost made it to the final again in the Belgian Football Cup 2012/13 ; against Cercle Bruges , however, they were eliminated from the current competition just after overtime in the second leg of the semi-final game. In the cup competition of the following year , KV Kortrijk was eliminated one round earlier from the current tournament; in January 2014 it was over after the quarter-finals against KAA Gent . In the 2013/14 championship , Martin could no longer match his old form and had an equally dedicated competition in his own team with the central defenders Maxime Chanot , Romain Reynaud , Michaël Heylen and Žarko Tomašević in his traditional position . In the regular season, he only made 16 appearances, with only half of these appearances over the full length of the game and often only making short appearances as a substitute.

National team career

Martin gained his first experience in his home country around 2003, when he was called up for the French U-18 and U-19 teams, among others, and played a number of international matches. He also had other missions for the junior team in his home country, as well as for the French U-21 national team with which he also took part in the 2005 tournament in Toulon . His commitment to the national team ended in 2006 and when he was 22 years old. Before that, he was brought into the U-21 squad several times this year.
