Today, Bassermann Verlag mainly publishes advice and entertainment literature. The most famous author of the publishing house is Wilhelm Busch .

history

Friedrich Daniel Bassermann (lithograph from 1842)

From 1833 to 1841 Friedrich Daniel Bassermann ran a drugstore in Mannheim. He sold this to his brother and founded a bookstore with Karl Mathy in 1843 . The Deutsche Zeitung , whose editor was Georg Gottfried Gervinus , developed into the most important title of the young publisher . Bassermann also published novels and non-fiction books by authors such as Hoffmann von Fallersleben . After Mathy left the publishing house, it was called Bassermannsche Verlagbuchhandlung from 1854. A year later, Friedrich Daniel Bassermann committed suicide. His widow employed Ludwig Aster as managing director and sold the publishing house to Aster and Otto Friedrich Bassermann in 1865 . Then the seat moved from Mannheim to Heidelberg . In 1867 Aster left the company so that it was now fully owned by Bassermann.

Bassermann won Wilhelm Busch for his publishing house, which he knew from his apprenticeship in Munich . From 1871/72 he published all of his works in the Bassermann publishing house. The first two titles were, for example, " Die fromme Helene " and " Bilder zur Jobsiade ". In 1878 Bassermann moved with his family and the company to Munich to facilitate the collaboration with his most important author Busch. The relationship between the author and the publisher was not free from tension: Due to disputes over the fee, Busch even hired a lawyer in 1884. In 1896 Wilhelm Busch finally sold all rights to his publications for a one-off payment of 50,000 guilders to Bassermann. In 1903 Bassermann gave up the Bassermannsche Verlag bookstore for health reasons.

After the Second World War , the Bassermannsche publishing bookstore was revived by Ernst Battenberg . He had previously founded the Battenberg Verlag, named after him, in Stuttgart and relocated to Munich in the early 1960s. In 1973 he sold the company to Frank Sicker, the owner of Falken Verlag from Niedernhausen . At this point in time, Bassermann had annual sales of 500,000 German marks . After the takeover, the Bassermannsche Verlagsbuchhandlung ceased operations and the program was fully integrated into the Falken Verlag. It was not until 1988 that Bassermann came back onto the market as an imprint of Falken, it was Falken's first daughter . The publisher mainly published guides for the modern second-hand bookshop.

In the 1990s, the Falken Verlag was solidly positioned with Bassermann according to media reports. Only after the takeover by the Random House publishing group in 1998 did economic difficulties become known, which is why austerity measures were subsequently introduced and employees made redundant. The Falken and Bassermann publishers continued to have their headquarters in Niedernhausen . At the end of 2001, the owners announced that the company would be sold to Gräfe und Unzer because the ambitious goals in the market for guidebooks could not be achieved. Since this project also failed, the Falken Verlag was closed. The Bassermann Verlag moved with some employees from Niedernhausen to Munich to the headquarters of the Random House publishing group. Bassermann is still an independent publisher of the company.
