Bengt Gustavsson Nordenskiöld (born September 6, 1891 in Sundsvall , † January 28, 1983 in Österhaninge ) was a Swedish general .

Life

Nordenskiöld was the son of the director Freiherr Gustaf Henrik Nordenskiöld and his wife Esther Laura, nee. Andersson. He joined the armed forces as a volunteer in 1907 and became a lieutenant in 1912 . He studied at the War Academy from 1922 to 1924 and was then selected for the General Staff, for which he worked from 1928. In 1931 he was trained as an air observer and in 1933 went to the military academy as a teacher. He was reappointed to the General Staff in 1934 , trained as a pilot and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1936 .

Nordenskiöld became a colonel in 1937 and, in 1941, the youngest person of this era, major general . In 1938 he was appointed commander of the 1st Flyges squad and in 1942, when he was appointed lieutenant general , commander of the air force.

Nordenskiöld was also a candidate for the post of commander-in-chief of the armed forces in 1951, but in the end he did not get a move, but Nils Swedlund was appointed. According to Tage Erlander , the decision against Nordenskiöld was also made because of his quick-tempered temperament. With the retirement, it was common to promote merited military personnel again, because of his achievements Nordenskiöld was even promoted as an active soldier to general in April 1954 . In July of the same year he retired.
