Bo Torsten Rapp (born April 20, 1905 in Stockholm , † March 23, 1993 ibid) was a Swedish general .

Life

Torsten Rapp joined the Navy in 1923 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1926.In 1928 he moved to the Swedish Air Force, which was newly created in 1926 . He served in the Organization Department from 1935 to 1938 and was promoted to captain in 1937 . Other stations included the F2 squadron in Hägernäs and the organization department of the air force staff. In 1944 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

In the same year Rapp became commodore of the F17 squadron in Kallinge and in 1948 he moved to the headquarters of the Air Force as deputy chief of staff. In October 1955 he was promoted to major general and on January 15, 1960 Commander in Chief of the Air Force. In 1961 he gave the office to Lage Thunberg and was Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces until 1970.

During his time as head of the air force, Torsten Rapp made the decision not to equip Sweden's military with nuclear weapons ; Faced with the decision between nuclear armament and the purchase of the Saab 37 for cost reasons , he chose the new fighter aircraft.
