Karl Friedrich Kohlenberg

Karl Friedrich Kohlenberg ( pseudonym : Benno Frank , born August 15, 1915 in Berlin-Mariendorf ; † September 2002 ) was a German writer .

Life

Karl Friedrich Kohlenberg was the son of a businessman and shipowner . From 1922 he lived with his parents in Schwerin , from 1928 he attended high school in Norden (East Friesland) . At the age of thirteen, he was hired on a fishing steamer in Emden in 1928 and made it to Iceland and Greenland . In the following year he repeated his escape attempt and this time came to Spitzbergen . From 1929 to 1931 he attended a secondary school in Hamburg and from 1931 to 1933 a private school in Detmold . He then completed an internship on a Mecklenburg estate. After that he did his labor service in Emsland until 1934 . A bicycle trip to Italy followed, which took him to Sicily. From there he crossed to North Africa and stayed for a while in Tripoli ( Libya ) and in the Sahara , where he made the acquaintance of members of the anti-Italian resistance movement of the Tuareg .

After his return to Germany, Kohlenberg completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Aachen from 1935 to 1937 . At the beginning of the Second World War he was drafted into the flak . He took part in ethnological and geographic lectures at the University of Bonn as a guest student . In 1941 he passed the Abitur for gifted students in Berlin . Kohlberg was a soldier in the air intelligence force and was stationed in Athens , Crete , the Balkans and most recently in Prague . He became an American prisoner of war, from which he returned to Aachen in 1946.

Kohlberg lived in Aachen as a freelance writer. 1950/51 he was also an employee of the " Aachener Nachrichten ". From the 1950s he made frequent trips with his own sailing yacht to Denmark , to the Dutch North Sea coast and through the English Channel . He later traveled to Algeria , Tunisia and Libya with the help of a scholarship . From 1959 to 1962 he was editor of the sailing sports magazine " Die Yacht ". Kohlberg spent the last years of his life in the Belgian border town of Eynatten .

Karl Friedrich Kohlenberg wrote books for young people in which he partly dealt with historical topics, especially early modern voyages of discovery, and partly processed his own travel experiences. In addition, manuals for sailors and non-fiction books on ethnological topics and pre-astronautics were created . He also translated non-fiction books from English.

In 1946, Kohlenberg was one of the founding members of the " West German Authors' Association " in Düsseldorf . He was a member of the Humboldt Society .
