Berchtold was the name of a noble family that originally came from Tyrol . In addition to Lower Austria , it was also widespread in Hungary , Bohemia and Moravia from the 16th century .

history

Maximilian Berchtold, Lord of Sachsengang , was accepted on March 13, 1603 as a farmer among the new equestrian families; Johann Baptist Berchtold received this honor on February 26, 1606, Jakob Berchtold followed on January 5, 1616.

Berchtold zu Ungarschitz

Jakob von Berchtold († May 28, 1641 in Vienna) had three wives. After his marriage to Dorothea Katharina, the widowed Süssin, he married Maria Magdalena Susanna von Hegenmüller , who bore him six children who survived him. After the death of his second wife, Jakob married Regina Ritz ( Rützin ) von Grub († May 20, 1655) in Passau on November 14, 1627, the third wife.

On March 27, 1618 Jakob took up his post as councilor and regent of the regiment of the Lower Austrian provinces. On January 6th, 1626 he received the knighthood and rural team for Austria above and below the Enns and on July 6th, 1627 the confirmation of the knightly nobility and coat of arms as well as the right to own and sell country estates, free seating , the exemption from civil offices and the Title Vest .

In 1628 Jakob acquired the Moravian rule Ungarschitz from Hans Georg von Schwarzenau and accepted the title of Ungarschitz and Fratting . He became director of the court chamber on August 31, 1627, before Emperor Ferdinand II appointed him baron on May 4, 1633. In 1631 he received Döschen as a fief, on July 13, 1632 Zoppanz and Pottendorf followed ; In 1633 he acquired Pullitz and in 1636 Kojatitz , which he united with Pullitz. On October 30, 1635 he was accepted into the Lower Austrian gentry. He was buried in the right side choir of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna , where his tomb is not far from the Emperor Frederick II and the Leopold Altar.

His son Baron Franz Benedikt von Berchtold and his two brothers were raised to the rank of imperial count by Leopold I on July 29, 1673 . In addition to the title high and well-born , they were also given the surname Herren von und zu Ungarschiz, Fratting and Pulitz . With Jakob's death the inheritance was divided: Franz Benedikt received Ungarschitz, Matthias Ernst received Pottendorf and Pulitz and Jakob Philipp received Radim near Kölln in Bohemia. In 1666 Matthias acquired the Mladonowitz and Budkau estates in the Trebitsch district . The latter houses a burial place of the Berchtold with the church of St. Martin.

Knight coat of arms

In a blue shield there is a rising golden lion, which with a bare sword leads a blow in the right paw, but on the left paw holds a round, raised and pointed white shield in the middle. On top of the crowned open helmet is the described lion. The helmet cover is gold and blue.

Barons coat of arms

In the first and fourth golden fields is a crowned black eagle with outspread wings and claws; In the second and third field there is a pyramid-shaped black tip reaching to the upper edge of the field, on which a rising, crowned golden lion is placed inwards, with a bare sword in the right paw, but a round pointed sword in the middle holding a silver or white shield in front of him. The remaining space of the field next to the point is three times red on both sides and twice white in between, tinged obliquely in stripes. Above are three crowned open helmets, on the first stands the crowned black eagle with outspread wings, on the middle the above-described crowned golden lion with sword and shield, and on the third helmet on the left a closed flight, which on the left is red and silver or white is tinged. The helmet cover is gold on the right and silver and red on the left.
