administration Regional Council Stuttgart

The Tannenwald landslide is a landslide that occurred in 1988 in the east of the Baden-Württemberg community of Waldstetten in the area of the Tannenwald and Vögelesrain tubs .

On October 7, 1996, the regional council of Stuttgart established a nature reserve of the same name with the number 1219.

location

The area affected by the landslide covers about eleven hectares and is located on the southern slope of a ridge that descends from the Hornberg to the northern Alb foreland. In terms of nature , the area belongs to the eastern foothills of the Alb. It lies in the lowest layer of the Brown Jura (Dogger), the Aalenium, which in turn is subdivided into the Opalinus Clay (Brauner Jura alpha) and the iron sandstone series (Brauner Jura beta).

procedure

At the foot of the landslide, the terrain has unfolded into bumpy hills

The landslide in March 1988 was preceded by prolonged rainfall, which, together with the rapid melting of the snow, led to strong moisture penetration of the subsoil and reduced its strength. Presumably, the area at the transition from the impermeable Opalinus Clay to the overlying rocks of the more permeable iron sandstone series then began to move.

Investigations show that several separate landslides followed one another: First of all, the lower parts of the slide zone slipped, causing the terrain up the slope to lose its support and slide.

In the upper area of the landslide there was mixed forest that was destroyed by the event. In the lower area there is pastureland, which is hunched over.

In the steep slope area of the slide, boulders of the iron sandstone series up to several cubic meters in size were moved.

Nature reserve

Due to the significant local significance of the landslide and its comparability with other landslides in the Swabian Alb , the area was declared a nature reserve in 1996. It is also possible to observe and document the natural resettlement of the landslide zone and to keep the event as unchanged as possible for future geological investigations.
