Protection applies in particular:
- The preservation and care of the beautiful landscape in the east of the historic town of Ellwangen with ponds, sheep pastures, orchards, old oaks, avenues, small forests and hedges;
- The preservation and care of the castle ponds as cultural monuments from the time of the Ellwang Benedictine monastery, which established the millennial pond economy at the castle ponds and other such ponds, as well as the habitat of rare and endangered plant and animal species in their communities, including the shining water lily, which is acutely endangered in the country , also dragonflies, amphibians and birds, including the little grebe and kingfisher with their main distribution in northern Württemberg in and around Ellwangen;
- The preservation and care of habitats that have become rare, such as wetlands, orchards, extensively used meadows and pastures, structurally rich deciduous forests and an abandoned Lower Jurassic quarry rich in fossils;
- The maintenance of a quiet, urban recreation area for near-natural and nature-loving recreation without events that disturb the animal and plant world through noise or other events;
- The conservation of the following species occurring in the area: tree falcon, kingfisher, red-backed killer, pochard, honey buzzard and little grebe.
