Bernhard Edmaier (* 1957 in Munich ) is a south German geologist and photographer .

Life

Bernhard Edmaier studied civil engineering and geology at the Technical University of Munich . He worked as a geologist in tunneling. In 1993 he made photography his main occupation and founded - based on his geological training - the agency "Geophot - Images of the Earth". He specializes in aerial photography .

In his photo projects he deals with the diverse structures, colors and shapes of the earth's surface. He works closely with the geologist and freelance science author Angelika Jung-Hüttl. His pictures appear in various national and international magazines (see web links), are published in illustrated books and shown in exhibitions. In his illustrated book “Earthsong” he opens up a new way of looking at the earth based on image patterns.

Bernhard Edmaier was awarded the Kodak Photo Book Prize in 1998 for his type of landscape photography and the renowned Hasselblad Master Award in 2001 (see links).

Bernhard Edmaier lives in Ampfing near Mühldorf am Inn .

Photo book "Earthsong"

The photo book published in 2004/05 (text author: Angelika Jung-Hüttl) combines large-format, unconventionally selected aerial photos with geological and geomorphological factual texts. He describes the earth using special water, rock and land forms and creates a new image of the earth.

The structure of the photos and texts follows an artistic-geographical theme:

  • Brief history of the earth
  • Water (sea, rivers, lakes, reefs, etc.)
  • Wasteland (high mountains, tundra, etc.)
  • Desert (sand and stone desert, ice and volcanic deserts, etc.)
  • Green (river and land forms, vegetation)

One aim of the volume is to look at the earth as a work of art with aerial photographs and distant views as well as the comparison of patterns . The images and topics are not - as in most specialist books - arranged according to their scientific typology or origin, but according to their appearance. In the introduction, the authors write:

“There are still areas on earth untouched by human hands. Nature rules there, and natural manifestations shape the landscape ... ” . The pictures capture “the breathtaking beauty of these regions” and document phenomena that can only last for moments but also for millions of years”.

The unusual juxtaposition of arctic glacier masses and tropical oceans opens up amazing similarities. The eccentric sequence - created from emotional-artistic perspectives - gives new insights into the formation of the earth's surface. The illustrated book has been published in six languages.
