Bernhard Köster (born October 20, 1869 in Lahn (Hümmling) , Emsland , † June 23, 1944 in Iburg in the district of Osnabrück ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and writer .

Life

Bernhard Koster grew up in the small Hümmlingort Lahn son of a village teacher and went in Meppen to the school . After graduating from high school in 1889, he studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . During this time he joined the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Sauerlandia Münster in the CV . He was ordained priest by Bishop Bernhard Höting in 1892 in Osnabrück Cathedral . Köster was initially a priest in Spelle and Lengerichactive in pastoral care, passed the rector's examination in Hanover in 1899 and was rector of the Hubert trade school in Schapen from 1899 to 1901 . From 1901 to 1915 he was pastor in Lübeck , then he took over the pastor's position in Glandorf near Osnabrück , was also district school inspector for the Iburg and Melle districts and taught at the Latin school in Glandorf.

He was known nationwide as a writer and historian. His most important works are Im Feuer der Kartaune , a novel from the time of the Prince-Bishop of Münster, Christoph Bernhard von Galen (1923), the story The beautiful Anna von Hake on Scheventorf (1924) and the Hohenstaufen novel Um die Krone des Emslandes (1925) . The Low German story Jan Kardel un siene gang from 1920 was reprinted in 2009 by the Aschendorff publishing house. The new edition thus makes the Low German original text available to a broad public for the first time in over 80 years. It depicts the struggle of a young farmer from floodplains against a gang that terrorizes Lindern and does not shy away from murder and robbery. Köster also wrote several local stories (Lahn, Wahn , Werlte , Waldhöfe, Ostenwalde , Glandorf), but only that of Glandorf was published. The background of the Swedish chronicle is the occupation of the Iburg , the looting of the rural population and the setting on fire of Glandorf and the St. John's Church during the Thirty Years War . The Heimatverein Glandorf published the Swedish Chronicle in 2013 as an audio book .

After a long and serious illness, Bernhard Köster died in the Marienhospital in Iburg. His biography remained unfinished . A typical case .
