The Berwanger Bach is a stream in the Kraichgau in the western district of Heilbronn and northern Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the upper Elsenz from the right after about ten kilometers to the southwest near the village of Richen in the city of Eppingen .

The creek is called Feldgraben up to the edge of the village of Kirchardt , then up to a little before Berwangen Birkenbach , then up to the end of the village Berwangens Alte Bach and only on the rest of the lower reaches Berwanger Bach.

It has a right arm of the mouth of Schanzgraben , which branches off to the right in Richen and, after a short walk through the village, also flows down into the Elsenz.

geography

Source and history

The stream of the Berwanger Bach begins under the name Feldgraben at about 267  m above sea level. NN in the northeast tip of the Kirchardter municipality as a ditch next to a field path that branches off a little north of the Fürfelder Karlshof from the K 2142 running west of the Ilmenwald .

The young brook follows this dirt road for almost two kilometers to the south-west and along with it it passes under the A 6 in the area of the so-called airfield . Beyond it soon swings at the inlet of a ditch that comes from the direction of Bad Rappenau - Grombach next to the road to Kirchardt , in the direction of the south and immediately reaches the village. It crosses the settlement area and takes up three tributaries from the left: at the beginning of the village an approximately 1 km long inflow that runs along the northern edge of the Kettend forest ; in the center of the village on Rappenauer Straße the Saubach , which is half longer and starts on the Heuäckern ; and on the other edge of the settlement on Heilbronner Straße the approximately 2 km long moat "Kurzer See", which is being created on the edge of the light forest .

Then the water runs under the name Berwanger Bach , next to a field path and accompanied by the valley road (L 1110), further south from the village. In front of the first buildings in Berwangen , the winch ditch, which is over 2 km long, joins a field path from the left , at the inflow the Berwanger Bach is already called Birkenbach , in the upper corner of the mouth there is a small pond. On the western edge of the Berwangen industrial zone, which begins on the left-hand side, the stream flows alongside the Am Bruchgraben street. Where the street Am Kandel crosses it from the industrial area, unstable tributaries flow from both sides, the right one from the fields south of the wooded area Lindenteich ; The left Hausener Graben from the Hausener Eck bay in front of the northern Berwanger Forest runs in a green strip next to Gewerbestrasse. Where they end against each other at the brook, the Berwanger Bach is called the Alte Bach .

On the northern edge of the Berwang settlement area, the right hill runs down next to the road from Ittlingen the Gänsäckergraben to the brook, which then crosses under the Hausener Straße; There are only a few houses on the left bank or in the floodplain, including the Upper Mill of the village , which was once fed by it, 150 m to the left of today's run on Fürfelder Straße, on the eastern edge of the Bachaue, which is even wider on the right. The creek now turns on a south-westerly course, leaving the larger, still following part of Berwangen on the right, it enters the landscape protection area Berwanger Bachtal between Kirchardt-Berwangen and Eppingen-Richen and the valley floor narrows sharply again. Thereupon the quite large forest area of the Bürgerwald moves to the left side on the bank. The 2.5 km long Kuhbach flows along its northern edge , from the middle of which the “Schulwiese” moat, 2.8 km, the longest inlet of the Berwang brook ever. At this point at the latest, he finally calls himself Berwanger Bach .

Shortly before it reaches the edge of the settlement of Richen , there are old abandoned quarries on the right side of the slope, it then goes in a tight left curve to the south, runs between a new part of the settlement on the eastern bank and the center of Richen on the western bank and divides into two close arms, the Pull under the bridge of the road to Gemmingen and then immediately turn west again in the Elsenzaue. The right, lower Schanzgraben surrounds the center of Richen closely to the south and flows a little below the bridge that spans it from the right and at an acute angle to about 182  m above sea level. NHN in the Elsenz flowing north , while the right, somewhat shorter and official lower course opposite the Richen stop of the Elsenz Valley Railway after 10.3 km the river at right angles to about 183  m above sea level. Reached NHN . Shortly before, a right Auenbach Schmalbach der Elsenz coming from far above crosses it , which then flows into the Schanzgraben.

Catchment area

The Berwanger Bach has a catchment area of 22.0 km², which in terms of natural space lies entirely in the lower Leinbachgäu of the Kraichgau .

Its greatest extent extends from northeast to southwest to the estuary. It is usually a bit wider on the left than on the right. In the north it borders on the inlet area of the Insenbach , which also flows west to the Elsenz . In the northeast, the competitor Fürfelder Bach drains over the Böllinger Bach east to the Neckar . In the east and south-east its tributary Massenbach and the Lein itself also flow to the Neckar. In the south lies the catchment area of the smaller Elsenz tributary Staudbach , in the west it passes itself and takes in smaller tributaries from the east. Only in the north-west are the somewhat longer Elsenz inlets competing, namely the Bockschafter Bach and finally the Rush Blade .

The watershed is usually not very pronounced in the flat hilly Kraichgau landscape through which the stream flows.

In addition to the river bordering countries mentioned in the previous section, the city of Bad Rappenau and the communities of Massenbachhausen and Gemmingen also have small areas on the edge of the catchment area.

geology

The catchment area and course of the Berwanger Bach lie almost entirely in the Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld Formation ) of the Middle and in the Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt Formation ) of the Lower Keuper . The shallow slopes are predominantly and partly the edge of hill quaternary loess - Sediment covers. The middle, flat and wide valley area is filled with floodplain sediments from the same period.

The Quellbach Feldgraben arises near a hill cap in the Gipskeuper and reaches the Lettenkeuper before it turns onto the valley axis running south before Kirchardt. Behind the village the valley level widens in front of the Berwang industrial zone, from there the stream runs in the floodplain sediment. Further down the valley in its western course, shortly before Richen, it reaches the Upper Muschelkalk , recognizable by the row of abandoned quarries on the right slope that open up the layer boundary between Lettenkeuper and Upper Muschelkalk. Both estuary branches run out in the alluvial sediment of the Elsenz valley.

nature and landscape

The Berwangerbachtal is located in the poorly forested Kraichgau, which is characterized by intensive arable farming almost everywhere. In the Berwangen area, the brook itself has been straightened; further down the valley, a near-natural, meandering lowland brook has been preserved, which is accompanied throughout by wood on the banks and in which original black alder and ash predominate. Amphibian species (common toad, common frog, green toad, tree frog and crested newt) hibernate in the Bürgerwald forest on the south side of its lower reaches , which live in spring and summer in the floodplain or in the groundwater and rainwater pools of the old mining areas opposite on the north slope. The 74 hectare nature reserve “Berwanger Bachtal bei Eppingen-Richen” was designated by ordinance, which, starting on the southern outskirts of Berwangen, extends as a narrow band over more than three kilometers along the stream to the eastern edge of the settlement of Richen. It mainly includes the valley floodplain and the northern slope of the valley near the old quarries and is filled with a mosaic of small structures - flowing and standing waters and wetlands, woody areas on the banks, in the floodplains and in the corridor, various types of meadows, rains, fringing strips, Forest edges, embankment and succession areas as well as former mining areas - which also form a biotope network with the civil forest and are in the habitats of many plant and animal species, some of which are endangered.

The lowest course of the brook lies in a water protection area. In the center of Berwang and on the eastern outskirts of Richen, right by the stream, there is one oak each under nature conservation.
