The Diocese of Iași ( Latin : Dioecesis Iasensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Romania with its seat in Iași .
history
The origins of the diocese go back to the 1607 Bacau diocese in small Wallachia, which was dissolved in 1818 and co-administered by the Apostolic Vicariate of Moldova. The diocese of Iași was on June 27, 1884 by Pope Leo XIII. built. The Franciscan Minorite Nicolae Iosif Camilli became the first bishop .
According to Article 22 of the new Law on Religious Affairs and in compliance with the decree of the communist government in 1948, the Catholic dioceses of the Latin rite in Romania had been reduced to two: Diocese of Iasi and Diocese of Alba Iulia . The Archdiocese of Bucharest was integrated into Iaşi, the dioceses Oradea Mare , Satu Mare and Timişoara , after Alba Iulia. This created a very confusing situation. Each diocese continued to exist canonically, administratively and politically, from June 1951 to 1989 it represented the Diocese of Iași, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bucharest, before the state authorities. No bishops could be appointed; so the dioceses were led for many years by a Ordinarius substitutus or by an apostolic administrator . Bishop Petru Pleşca received in 1965 the title of "general provicar".
On October 28, 1993 there were areas for the establishment of the Apostolic Administration of Moldovia, which was raised to the Diocese of Chișinău in 2001 .
The first cathedral "Adormirea Maicii Domnului" (Assumption of Mary) was consecrated in 1789.
Today's cathedral "Sfânta Maria Regină" (Queen of Mary) was consecrated on November 1, 2005.
