Blaise Nkufo (* 25. May 1975 as Blaise Nkufo Isetsima in Kinshasa , Zaire ) is a former Swiss footballer .
Career
society
Born in what was then Zaire, today's Democratic Republic of the Congo , he fled to Switzerland with his parents when he was seven. He completed his Matura in Lausanne and took on Swiss citizenship at the age of 20. In 1993/94, the then young player rose to the professional squad of FC Lausanne-Sport . There he won his first and for a long time only title as a footballer when he won the Swiss Cup. After only one year he moved to FC Echallens , where he only stayed one season to go to his first foreign station for the 1995/96 season. The Arab association al-Arabi signed Nkufo. However, the striker was not happy there and after a year he moved back to Switzerland to Yverdon-Sport FC and in the following season to his home club Lausanne. After 94 games and 43 goals for the Swiss national league A clubs FC Lausanne-Sport, Grasshopper Club Zurich , FC Lugano and FC Luzern , the brawny striker moved to the German second division club 1. FSV Mainz 05 in winter 2000/01 , for whom he played in scored 20 times in 42 games for a year and a half. After the missed promotion, Nkufo left the 05er in the summer of 2002 for Hannover 96 , where he did not assert himself in the unsuitable position as a winger.
From the summer of 2003 Nkufo played for the Dutch honorary division FC Twente , for whom he scored 64 goals in 126 games in the first four seasons. In 2008 and 2009 he was the Dutch runner-up with the team. Also in 2009 they reached the final of the KNVB Cup , but had to admit defeat to SC Heerenveen . On August 15, 2009, Nkufo scored his 103rd goal for Twente in a 1-0 win at The Hague , breaking Jan Jeuring's club record . At the beginning of December 2009 the fans announced that they would put up a Nkufo statue in front of the Grolsch Veste Stadium . At the end of the 2009/10 season, FC Twente won the first championship title in the club's history. It was Nkufo's first title in 15 years.
After the 2010 World Cup , Nkufo joined the Seattle Sounders in Major League Soccer to be closer to his family. In eleven games in the 2010 season, he scored five goals. Shortly before the season opener 2011, Nkufo and the Seattle Sounders dissolved their contractual relationship. A week later, Nkufo declared his professional career over.
National team
Nkufo's career in the Swiss national team ended early. After the striker was not given a regular place, he turned his back on the national team after seven appearances in 2002 because he felt misunderstood and suspected a connection with his skin color. In May 2007, however, Köbi Kuhn announced that he would like to consider Nkufo again for the national team in the future. He accepted the offer on June 8 and showed a good game against the Netherlands on August 22, 2007. Nevertheless, he signed up for the European Championship 2008 due to injury. In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup under the new coach Ottmar Hitzfeld , Nkufo was used in every game and scored five goals in ten games. After the 2010 World Cup , Nkufo ended his national team career.
useful information
Nkufo is married and has two children whose names he has tattooed on his upper arms. He names Malcolm X and Jean Ziegler as role models. For years he has pointed out that his name is spelled without an apostrophe and that the "N" is not pronounced.
His half-brother Yannick Nkufo , who is twelve years his junior, is also a soccer player. Blaise once piloted him into the team of Jong Twente, the reserve of his club at the time, FC Twente. Since 2005 Yannick has played mainly in the Swiss first division .
