blink-182 is the fifth studio album by the American pop-punk band blink-182 . Produced by Jerry Finn , it was released in 2003 by the record label Geffen Records , making it the last album released before the band's hiatus (2005-2009). It is not entirely clear whether blink-182 is actually the name of the album or whether only the band name is shown on the cover. The band members sometimes speak of the "unnamed album".

The album marks a departure from blink-182's previous work and received mostly positive reviews from music critics. The collaboration with the Cure singer Robert Smith , who participated in the title All of This , was particularly noted . Four singles that were released from the album - Feeling This , I Miss You , Down and Always - also appeared on the album Greatest Hits . It's a classic concept album . Not only does the "common thread" run through all pieces of music, a mood that is more melancholy than earlier works and the increased addressing of serious and emotional topics, there is also a close lyrical and musical relationship between the individual songs: Overall, there is a harmonious flow through the The entire work can be found between Down and Go , which have in common the lyrical but not the melodic mood, the instrumental interlude The Fallen Interlude , while the two songs Easy Target and All of This merge seamlessly with the end motif of the previous one is used as the initial beat of the next.

The album CD features a live version of the song Anthem Part Two as a bonus track , the original version of which appeared in Take Off Your Pants and Jacket .

reception

Stefan Friedrich stated in a review on laut.de that blink-182 with their self-titled album will "probably split the masses again", but this time it will happen in a different way, since the band has grown up. In the beginning the record “still runs in the usual catchy and melody-like tracks”, but from Violence “then more and more completely atypical blinking passages in the songs, such as quiet piano parts” and “ spoken word chunks” without theirs Losing earwig suitability. But “even if the song structures meanwhile go beyond the commonplace scheme , the lightness of Blink is retained for most of the time, e. B. Go , Asthenia or Always “. Friedrich describes the collaboration with Robert Smith as the most incredible in years. All of This is "a pleasant symbiosis of Cure and Blink 182, which surprisingly works and which provides a good example for the new Blink".

Likewise, Armin Linder in plattentests.de certifies the band's increasing maturity. That is "still not a reinvention of rock music", but "the three of them no longer want to bang their heads through the wall, with their hands in their pants or with their tongues under their skirt." They managed to "grow up" and “the surprisingly fun-free lyrics don't even justify the Parental Advisory logo.” The pace is “around half of the tracks well below the usual punk rock speed”. That sounds “in the worst case, like quite audible colleagues like A or Eve 6 . Ideally for a capable rock band with incompetent singers ”. The band managed a surprise with the album, which is “more level than all previous Blink 182 albums combined”.

Track list

The album was produced by Jerry Finn (tracks 1–6,8-14) and Sick Jacken (7). Ryan Hewitt took care of the recording . The songs were mixed by Jerry Finn (1, 7, 9, 13), Tom Lord ‐ Alge (2, 6, 12), Andy Wallace (3–5, 8, 11) and Ryan Hewitt (10, 14).
