action

Jason Gates works in his stepfather Alex Gates' wine store in Miami . The senior has the wife Suzanne and the lover Gabriela, who comes from Cuba . Alex is on the verge of insolvency.

Alex Gates and his accomplice Victor Spansky steal jewelry from Frank Reese, who is a customer of the wine shop and for whom Gabriela works as a nanny. The stolen necklace is to be sold in New York, Suzanne discovers Alex's plane ticket and thinks he wants to visit a lover. In her jealousy, she hurts her husband. Fearing his revenge, Jason and his mother Suzanne drive to another city, taking a suitcase from Alex with them. Only later do they find the necklace Alex hid in the suitcase.

Alex Gates and Spansky are looking for them to get the necklace back. Eventually they find the fugitives on a friend of their mother's houseboat. But Jason manages to escape with the necklace in time. He takes his mother with him, who is behind the wheel and panics when she notices Alex and Spansky following her. She speeds into a construction site and loses control of the car. She dies in the accident and Jason is seriously injured. Alex tries desperately to find the necklace in the accident car, but has to flee with Spansky when the police arrive.

Later on, Alex and Spansky get into an argument because Jason said Spansky had returned the necklace to Alex - which is not true. Alex kills Spansky in the fight.

At the end, Jason, Gabriela and Alex, whom she has called, meet on a boat. In the worsening argument, Gabriela disappears with the necklace, Jason smashes Alex's legs with the boat.

In the meantime Gabriela has changed her mind, she comes back and hands the necklace to Alex, who has been dragged ashore by his stepson and is unable to move. She briefly considers joining Jason on the boat, but in the end Jason goes out to sea alone. When the ambulance alerted by Jason approaches, Alex throws the necklace into the sea.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote in ReelViews that Jack Nicholson was a good actor, but the film was not a good movie. He criticized that the elements of the plot were not new. He described the characters as "banal".

Roger Ebert praised in the Chicago Sun-Times of February 21, 1997 especially the portrayals of the "stars" Jack Nicholson and Michael Caine.

Cinema described the film as "unpredictable" and "exciting", TV fiction film as "turbulent" and "fast-paced".

“[...] a turbulent tragedy with emphatically comical-absurd moments. The bizarre characters and their lively dialogues fully unfold in the remarkable cast. The script and direction manage to mix a popular thriller with almost parodic moments from trivial, genre-like motifs. "

Awards
