Robert Pierre "Bob" Guindon (born November 19, 1950 in Labelle , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 527 games for the Nordiques de Québec and Winnipeg Jets in the World Hockey Association in the course of his active career between 1967 and 1981 (WHA) and six other games for Winnipeg in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of left winger . In the service of the Winnipeg Jets, Guindon won the Avco World Trophy three times between 1976 and 1979, where he was honored individually as a WHA Playoff MVP in 1978 .
Career
Guindon spent his junior years in his home province of Québec . There he played in the 1967/68 season, first for the Alouettes de Saint-Jérôme in the previous league of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), before moving to the Canadien junior de Montréal , which at that time was the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) belonged to. The winger spent two extremely successful years with the Junior Canadiens . Both in the season 1968/69 and 1969/70 he won with the team the double from the J. Ross Robertson Cup of the OHA and the Memorial Cup of the umbrella organization Canadian Hockey League . In particular, Guindon was able to contribute significantly to the two title wins in 1970 with 26 scorer points in the OHA playoffs and 19 in the Memorial Cup tournament. Consequently, he was appointed to the Second All-Star Team of the OHA at the end of the season and then selected in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft in the second round in 26th place by the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League (NHL).
After the selection in the draft, the attacker shortly before his 20th birthday switched to the organization of the Detroit Red Wings, where he was used exclusively in the farm teams of the mother club in the following two game years between 1970 and 1972 . In addition to two appearances for the Muskegon Mohawks in the International Hockey League (IHL), he mainly played for the Fort Worth Wings in the Central Hockey League (CHL). With no prospect of missions with the Red Wings in the NHL, Guindon decided in May 1972 to sign a contract with the Nordiques de Québec from the newly founded World Hockey Association (WHA), which was built as a competitive league to the NHL . The Nordiques had already secured his transfer rights for the league as part of the WHA General Player Draft , which was held in February 1972. The French-Canadian immediately made a lasting impression back in his homeland. In his first year he achieved 56 points scorer before increasing the value to 70 points in the following year. This included more than 30 goals in one game year for the only time in his career. After the 1974/75 season was rather disappointing with just 30 points in the regular season , his game in the playoffs, where he scored 13 times in 15 games, was largely responsible for ensuring that the Nordiques the final series of the Avco World Trophy achieved. There they were clearly defeated by last year's champions Houston Eros with 0: 4.
Although Guindon had convinced in the playoffs, the Nordiques de Québec decided in October 1975 just before the start of the season to prematurely dissolve the contract with him. Only a few weeks later, he received a trial contract for eight games from league rivals Winnipeg Jets . Due to the financial problems in Winnipeg, they refrained from hiring the attacker in the middle of the month, so that he could not initially find a new employer. It was not until February of the following year that the Jets finally secured the services of the free agent , who won the Avco World Trophy with the team for the first time at the end of the season. In the following two years, Guindon developed into a regular in the Winnipeg squad. In the course of the 1978 WHA playoffs in particular, however, he overshadowed his teammates Bobby Hull , Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg , who were otherwise in the focus of media interest . With 13 scorer points, including eight goals, in the franchise's nine playoff games , he was the decisive factor in winning the Avco World Trophy again after the team had lost the final series to its ex-club Québec last year. As a result, but surprisingly for many, was named a WHA Playoff MVP . When they took part in the final for the fourth time in a row in 1979, the Jets secured their third title.
With the dissolution of the WHA at the end of the 1978/79 season , the Winnipeg Jets were among the four franchises that were included in the NHL for the 1979/80 season . Since the Detroit Red Wings refrained from exercising their prerogative to Guindon's NHL transfer rights, which had existed since 1970, he remained property of the Jets despite the league change. However, the offensive player did not succeed in asserting himself in the somewhat higher quality league. With the exception of six games in the 1979 Christmas season, he spent the seasons between 1979 and 1981 with the Tulsa Oilers in the CHL, which served as the Winnipeg farm team. There he also worked as a playing assistant trainer at times. In the summer of 1981 he ended his active career at the age of 30.
