Brothers Grimm Festival Hanau
The Brothers Grimm Festival in Hanau are open-air plays that take place in Hanau every year from mid-May to late July . With currently around 80,000 visitors per season, the Hanau Festival is one of the largest open-air plays in Hesse. Since 1985, several fairy tales from the children's and house tales of the Brothers Grimm have been dramatized and performed in the palace gardens of Schloss Philippsruhe (mainly premieres ).
history
The 200th birthday of the Brothers Grimm in 1985 was the occasion for the 1st Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale Festival. As the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm and as the starting point of the German Fairy Tale Route, Hanau was ideal as a venue. The palace gardens of Schloss Philippsruhe provided a romantic backdrop for the open-air games . The complete seating, at least 600 seats and all the backdrops were cleared away every night.
In the second year, a large grandstand was built in the park for the festival. It offered more viewers and significantly improved visibility and acoustics. Almost 10,000 visitors came over the summer and enjoyed the two productions of fairy tales in the park.
today
In 2000 the venue was moved to the amphitheater Hanau, which has been covered since 2002 and has a capacity of 1230 seats, with the castle and park as a backdrop on the edge of the castle park. In the 2013 season Frank-Lorenz Engel took over the management. A year later, in its 30th season, the festival got a new name and was renamed from “Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale Festival” to “Brothers Grimm Festival”.
