geography

Braunsdorf is near Auma , on the northern edge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains .

The district of Tischendorf belonged to Braunsdorf . Neighboring communities are Harth-Pöllnitz in the district of Greiz as well as Mittelpöllnitz and the city of Triptis in the Saale-Orla district .

history

Braunsdorf was first mentioned in a document on January 8, 1441. The place name arose from the name Bruno, as some of the bishops of the Mildenfurth monastery were called.

On an island of the former Gutsteich in the northeastern village was a moated castle of the Lords of Pöllnitz . It was probably built in the 16th century as a square with four corner towers. Remnants of the complex still bear witness to the moated castle. Over time, the owners changed often. The Seydewitz family was expropriated in 1945 in accordance with the Potsdam Agreement. The castle was torn down except for the corner tower, based on the notorious Order 209 of the SMAD .

Braunsdorf was a member of the Weidatal administrative community until January 3, 1996 , after which the community belonged to the Auma-Weidatal administrative community . On December 1, 2011, the city of Auma and the communities of Braunsdorf, Göhren-Döhlen , Staitz and Wiebelsdorf merged to form the rural community of Auma-Weidatal.
