Brentel (painter family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Brentel family of painters emerged in Lauingen in the second half of the 16th century , had more than ten members and lasted until the middle of the 17th century. Its best-known representative was the eraser and miniaturist Friedrich Brentel .

The family goes back to the brothers Georg and Hans Brentel , who painted in the Renaissance style. They were the sons of Bernhard Brentel, a citizen of Lauingen, whose profession is unknown. Georg was best known as a coat of arms painter, while Hans Brentel worked as a map painter . The somewhat older builder Gregor Brentel from Lauingen , who may have been her cousin, belonged to the same generation . However, he had no male offspring.

Georg Brentel had two sons with his first wife - David and Elias - and one with his second wife: Friedrich . Since he emigrated to Strasbourg in 1587, together with his second wife and the children from this marriage, Friedrich grew up there from the age of seven and lived there. David completely followed in his father's footsteps and worked as a coat of arms and miniature painter in Lauingen, where he also had a reputation and was therefore a member of the council. His younger brother Elias emigrated to the East Franconian Burglengenfeld ; from 1622 he was also a town painter in Bayreuth . A son of David, Conrad, worked in Tübingen from 1621 to 1633 . The two sons of Elias, Hans Friedrich (II.) And Friedrich (II.) Were painters (Hans Friedrich also Münzeisenschneider) in Franconia. Both died very young, while their father was still alive. Very productive, working with incredible precision, Friedrich created in the mannerist style . His two children, Hans Friedrich and Anna Maria, were also artistically active in Strasbourg, but died very young with no offspring. Since Georg Maler’s three daughters were also married, the Brentel family of painters had contact with other painters. The most important connection came about through Sibilla's marriage with the Tübingen painter Anton Ramsler . Anna Brentel married Hans Walch , who worked in Lauingen, and Regina married Hans Bühler, who came from Niederehnheim in Alsace, in Strasbourg .

Georg's younger brother Hans had three sons, two of whom - Hans Brentel the Younger and Georg Brentel the Younger - became painters. Hans continued his father's activity as a map painter, but he was also a minstrel . All of his four sons were only active as musicians. The somewhat younger Georg referred to himself as a painter all his life, but was much more interested in mathematics and astronomy. He produced numerous writings on various sundials , which were illustrated with copper engravings based on his drawings. As a respected citizen of Lauingen, he sat on the council and was even mayor, but in order to avoid being forced to convert, he moved to Nördlingen in 1621 , where he worked as a city architect and hospital master. He had no offspring.

Family tree of the members

In Tübingen a Friedrich Brindel was mentioned who, together with Johannes Ramsler, painted the sundial at the Tübingen pharmacy (exact year is unknown). That Friedrich Brentel is meant here is unlikely, rather it is about his son Hans Friedrich, or perhaps someone else.
