Buol-Berenberg is the name of a noble family that forms a branch of the old Buol family from Graubünden , which were ennobled in various branches.

The Buol-Berenberg branch was raised to the nobility in 1707 and to the Austrian baron in 1795, and it acquired property in Upper Austria (today the district of Konstanz).

history

Originally from Rätien originating knights Buol (see genealogy: Ulrich Buol ) appears for the first time in 1340 in Davos with Ulrich von Bulen, one from Bohemia originating captain . The Buol are one of the oldest families in Graubünden, one of the so-called chief families of the Free State of the Three Leagues , Landammann of Davos and head of the Ten Courts Association since 1527.

Kaiserstuhl , Aargau, in 1548

The family chronicle later appears with his descendants Hans Buol the Elder (1529) as councilor and Konrad Buol (1570) as town clerk of Kaiserstuhl (today in the Swiss canton of Aargau ). Kaiserstuhl had been in the possession of the Prince Diocese of Constance since 1294 and then served as the center of the Constance state administration for centuries. The Obervogt residing in Kaiserstuhl exercised the rights of the prince-bishops over Hohentengen , Bergöschingen , Lienheim , Fisibach and Weiach . At the same time, since the conquest of Aargau by the Confederates in 1415 , Kaiserstuhl was also the center of an external office of the County of Baden , a common rule . This occasionally led to conflicts between the prince-bishop and the confederates. After the proclamation of the Helvetic Republic in March 1798 and the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, Kaiserstuhl lost its areas on the right bank of the Rhine to the Grand Duchy of Baden, founded in 1806 . The part on the left bank of the Rhine initially belonged to the canton of Baden , from 1803 to the canton of Aargau.

Hans von Buol (1470–1550), a descendant of Ulrich Boul (1460–1500), ensign of the Davos region, moved to the town of Kaiserstuhl on Lake Constance at the time of the Reformation and became a citizen there in 1523 and a councilor in 1529. His descendant Hans Andreas von Buol (1647-1708), a prince prince bergischer Council, was built by Emperor on October 11, 1707 Joseph I in the kingdom knighthood , along with all his cousins, with the nobility raised "by Berenberg".

With the purchase of the Adelshof Berenberg located outside of Mühlingen and, in 1731, the manorial estate of Mühlingen Castle north of Lake Constance, the new local and landlords Christoph Andreas and Georg Konrad established their family headquarters. The KK grenadier captain of the infantry Johann Ignaz von Buol-Berenberg received on May 29, 1795 from Emperor Franz II. The Austrian baron diploma as " von Berenberg and Mühlingen ".

From the year 1840 the not far located manor Zizenhausen came into von Buol'schen possession. From then on, the family established their own "Zizenhausen Line" for their descendants in Zizenhausen Castle .
