Rotenberg Castle (Bavaria)
Rotenberg Castle

The Outbound Burg Rotenberg , formerly known as Rothenberg or Rothenbergham called, was in the town of Bad Birnbach in Rottal-Inn of Bavaria . The Alteck castle stables near Birnbach could not be assigned an official castle name until 2011, only then was it assigned to Rotenberg . For this reason, the former castle complex can be found in numerous publications under the name Alteck .

history

Since the 12th century aristocrats can be found here who named themselves after Rotenberg. In 1222, Walchun II von Rothenberg, who came from the family of Chambe, died with Walchun II . His two nephews, Counts Alram and Albert von Hals, were the heirs . However, Count Palatine Rapoto II also made claims. A dispute broke out among all those involved in the inheritance. The dispute was mediated by Duke I. Ludwig settled. It seems that Rothenberg came to the Count Palatine, although the Counts of Hals were still involved. In 1241 the castle complex became the property of his son Count Palatine Rapoto III . mentioned when he returned wineries to Passau. The castle remained in the possession of the Ortenburgers until 1248. Subsequently, the son-in-law Hartmann I von Werdenberg , who the heir to Rapotos III. had married the castle to Duke Heinrich von Niederbayern in 1260 . He returned the goods to Passau in 1262, but retained the bailiwick rights .

In 1371 a Peter Tuschl appears as the owner of the Rotenberg Fortress . Perhaps this was an Ortenburg ministerial . The Rottauers, who also call themselves Rottau von Bergham , have been recorded here since the end of the 14th century . Presumably they came to Rotenberg through hereditary path, they were related to the Tuschl. The property then passed through inheritance and marriage to the Pieznauer and from them to the Nussdorfers , which can be proven here for the last time in 1558. They were followed by Hans Offenhaimer, then the gentlemen von Schwapbach. The Freiherrn von Astenhaim and the Freiherrn von Ginsheim auf Schwindach were the next owners.

Rotenberg Castle today

For a long time it was assumed that the castle complex near Bergham in the municipality of Haarbach was located at a location east of the church. In the meantime, the Alteck castle stable near Bad Birnbach has been identified as the former location. It was in close proximity to Neudeck Castle , which was probably intended to compete with Rotenberg. The fortress was destroyed by the Swedes in 1648.
