Sponheim Castle

The Burgsponheim originally Spanheim mentioned, which is ruin one from the Middle Ages derived Spur castle on the edge of the Hunsrück on the municipal area of the municipality Burgsponheim in the district of Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Geographical location

The castle is 245  m above sea level. NN on a 250 meter long mountain spur around which the Ellerbach flows on the south and east sides . Today's castle ruins are supported by the 130 meter long tip of the spur.

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1127 by two documents , at that time it was owned by Meginhard von Sponheim , who first called himself Graf von Sponheim. With the succession to his descendants, it became the ancestral seat of the Counts of Sponheim .

In the 13th century, the castle lost its importance as an ancestral seat and became the seat of count ministerials .

The existence of a castle chapel is documented by a letter of indulgence from 1300.

After the Sponheimers died out, the property went to the Margraves of Baden and the Counts of Veldenz and Palatine counts near Rhine in 1437 . An occupation of the castle by Ambrosio Spinola during the Thirty Years' War may still lead to destruction.

description

The castle was surrounded by a circular wall of a palace , a round watchtower , a mighty square keep , living justice aligned with abortion chamber , ornate windows and fireplace. The 22 meter high keep is built with humpback blocks and roughly dates to the late 12th century. It can be climbed as an observation tower and offers a good view of Burgsponheim from its platform. Further towers with humpback blocks can only be found south of the Nahe .

Others

The Blessed Jutta von Sponheim († 1136) and her brother, the Cologne Archbishop Hugo von Sponheim († 1137), are said to have been born in the castle. There is no evidence of this.
