Burkard Kunkel (born July 17, 1967 in Würzburg ) is a German jazz and improvisation musician ( basset horn , zither , bass clarinet , voice , composition ) and child and youth psychiatrist.

Live and act

Kunkel, who grew up in Heigenbrücken in the Spessart , first received zither lessons before he received extensive piano training at the age of ten . He also sang in a schola . At the age of 16 he learned the alto saxophone . Soon he was writing his first compositions for string orchestra and saxophone. After graduating from the Karl-Theodor-von-Dalberg-Gymnasium in Aschaffenburg, he first studied theology and philosophy in Innsbruck . He also played in the local funk band Supershuts . In 1988 he began studying medicine in Würzburg, which he continued in Frankfurt am Main from 1991. During this time he also devoted himself to the bass clarinet under the influence of Bennie Maupin , Eric Dolphy and Michel Pilz and began a. a. to perform with Rüdiger Carl and Annemarie Roelofs . In 1996 he received the Frankfurt Jazz Scholarship.

During his study trip to Finland, Kunkel got to know the accordionist Maria Kalaniemi , who inspired him to use the zither initially for free improvisation, and from 2006 increasingly for ballads ; He also played with Christopher Dell , Ruth Hommelsheim and Wolfgang Güttler in the group Magdalena Inc. , but also with Heinz Sauer , Tony Lakatos , Alfred Harth , Bertram Ritter, Frank Möbus , Steve Potts , Jürgen Wuchner , Rudi Mahall , Daniel Erdmann , Christoph Korn or Bülent Ates. With Markus Becker he founded the quartet Atlantic Auge (with John Schröder and Christian Ramond ). He was also active in the duo with Markus Becker and then in the Trio Vagant with Peter Fey. In 2004 he recorded the album Gulliver with John Schröder and Oliver Potratz , now his main job as a child and youth psychiatrist .
