The Bavarian Eisenbahnmuseum (BEM) is a private Eisenbahnmuseum in Nördlingen , in 1985 his vehicle on the site of collection 1982 disused railway depot housed Nördlingen. With over two hundred original vehicles, it is the largest private railway museum in southern Germany. The exhibits are based on the historical railway value of the object. For this reason, some of the existing objects are still in the "original / original state" of the acquisition and are gradually being processed as exhibition objects. The sponsor of the museum is the association of the same name, which is financed almost entirely from membership fees, entrance fees, donations and the proceeds from trips and events. Individual projects are thankfully supported by sponsors. The area of the museum extends over approx. 35,000 m² and includes the 15-permanent locomotive shed, the former railcar hall, a functional water tower, former administration building, workshops, locomotive treatment systems, sidings, a turntable and much more.
history
As early as 1848/49, with the construction of the Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn from Lindau to Hof in Nördlingen, a workshop for the maintenance of locomotives and wagons was established. Nördlingen thus became the seat of a railway office and a workshop. Only the wall between the workshops and the nave has survived from this time (destroyed during the war in 1945). Today's wing 3 of the segment locomotive shed comes in its original main components from the first phase of expansion of the plant, which took place in 1851; wings 1 and 2 followed. Due to the greater length of the new locomotives, these tracts were later extended to the front and partly also to the rear, that is, they were added, which now results in a certain "tightness" towards the turntable. The workshop buildings date from around 1930, as well as the floor plan of the railcar hall, which was initially called "Montirung". It was rebuilt several times in the 1930s, completely destroyed in 1945 and then rebuilt. In the course of time up to 1937, the facilities were constantly expanded and adapted to requirements. The last expansion was made from 1935 to 1937 when the locomotive shed stands were extended and a 20-meter turntable was installed.
The air raids of World War II in 1944 and 1945, when large parts of the depot were destroyed, marked a major turning point in history . Only tracts 2 and 3 of the roundhouse next to the workshop buildings and the water tower were spared . The systems were partially modernized and rebuilt in the years up to 1949.
In a short heyday, the depot saw the allocation of diesel locomotives ( V 100 and VT 98 ) and ETA 150 battery-powered railcars . As early as 1966, the scheduled home of steam locomotives ended . With the electrification of the Riesbahn Donauwörth – Aalen and the Ingolstadt – Neuoffingen railway line , many diesel locomotives became dispensable, so that in 1982 the depot was closed as an independent office. The closure of the branch lines from Nördlingen did the rest to bring silence to the entire Nördlingen station . In 1985, the railway maintenance office was also outsourced from the site and operations as a branch of the Augsburg depot were given up.
From the beginning, first as " Pfiffclub 52 1919 Condens", then EC 18 528 founded on June 15, 1969 and later renamed the Munich Railway Club (ECM) , the Bayerisches Eisenbahnmuseum eV association finally grew . V. (renamed when the museum moved into Nördlingen in 1985), which is now the sole sponsor of the museum. The vehicle collection was built up at different locations in Munich and suffered from lack of space. In autumn 1985, the Bavarian Railway Museum took over the partially dismantled facilities in Nördlingen, where the vehicles of the Monheim-Fünfstetten museum railway had already wintered in previous years. Since then, painstakingly detailed efforts have been made to set up a complete depot again. Some tracks had to be relocated and a number of locomotive shed stands had to be reconnected to the turntable. In addition, three new water cranes were installed to maintain the state of the steam locomotive era. The aim is to show visitors a depot from the 1950s.
An essential part of the museum concept is the operational (and therefore complex and expensive) presentation of different vehicles. The railway lines from Nördlingen to Feuchtwangen (the final station of this line is Dombühl) and to Gunzenhausen allow different trains to be put together and offer the visitor the experience of reliving the bygone era of the railway up close in real traffic. At certain events, machines are shown in operation in the museum or trips are made on the routes mentioned. Certified association members take on the necessary railway technical functions. Since several express train locomotives are operational, a long-distance program with special trains can be offered independently. The steam locomotives give off soot and water during operation, so a certain amount of dirt on individual vehicles must be expected. In connection with the museum exhibition, it is worth mentioning the youth group, which independently processes objects from the "scrap heap" to the exhibition locomotive.

Rail operations
Museum railways
The association Bavarian Railway Museum e. V. runs through its subsidiary, BayernBahn GmbH on the route to Gunzenhausen (length 39 km) and on the remaining section Landshut-Neuhausen of the railway line Landshut-Rottenburg (length 15 km) with historical vehicles of the gauge 1,435 mm with steam or Diesel operation through. In some cases, the museum railroad runs on sections of the Riesbahn to Möttingen (length 9 km) or Harburg (Swabia) (length 18 km); trains can also be operated here using electrical power (15 kV, 16 2/3 Hz alternating current). With several operational express steam locomotives, it is possible to carry out a long-distance travel program (usually day trips) with changing destinations. City tours in Munich and Landshut are offered during the Advent season .
BayernBahn GmbH
The subsidiary BayernBahn GmbH (formerly BayernBahn Betriebsgesellschaft mbH ) (BayernBahn) operates as a railway infrastructure company its own route from Nördlingen to Gunzenhausen, as well as the Landshut – Neuhausen railway line leased from DB Netz ; together they have a total length of 54 kilometers. BayerBahn Infra GmbH was founded as a spin-off for this purpose . As a rail transport company , BayernBahn provides services in freight transport / cargo logistics, in the field of work trains / construction logistics and special transport, such as special trips (also with museum vehicles) and push locomotives . Thanks to the good workshop equipment of the former depot, workshop services for maintenance, repair, maintenance or reconditioning of external vehicles can also be offered.
For a number of years now, some stately freight trains have been driven in the Nördlinger area. B. Wood and wood products. Diesel locomotives of the V 100 and V 60 series are normally used here, but sometimes the museum's steam locomotives are also used. Since January 2010 a freight train has been traveling the section between Wassertrüdingen and Gunzenhausen every day with a V 60. This picks up the train from the Schwarzkopf company , brings it to Gunzenhausen and hands it over to a BR 142 or BR 139 locomotive that takes it to Monheim am Rhein to the logistics center of the Henkel company . The train consists of 16 to 20 boxcars .
