The La Libertad district is located in the Huaraz province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on November 11, 1907. It has an area of ​​148 km². The 2017 census counted 1131 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1557, in 2007 it was 1280. The district administration is located in the approximately 3300  m high village of Cajamarquilla with 263 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cajamarquilla is located 26 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Huaraz .

Geographical location

The La Libertad district is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Negra in the south of the Huaraz province. The Río Vado, left tributary of the Río Chacchan (upper reaches of the Río Casma ), drains the area to the northwest.

The La Libertad district is bordered on the southwest by the district Huanchay , on the west by the districts Pampas Grande and Colcabamba , on the north by the district Pira , in the northeast on the district Huaraz , in the southeast of the district La Merced and the south by the district Coris (The last two districts mentioned belong to the province of Aija ).
