Carl Fredrich (1915)

Carl Fredrich (born July 20, 1871 in Stettin ; † January 5, 1930 ibid) was a German classical philologist , historian , classical archaeologist and high school teacher .

Life

Fredrich attended the city high school at the Grünen Schanze in Stettin, where the headmaster Hugo Lemcke aroused his interest in classical studies. From 1890 Fredrich studied philology , history and archeology at the University of Göttingen . In 1894 he was there with Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff to the Dr. phil. PhD . In the following year he passed the exam pro facultate docendi in the subjects of Greek , Latin , German and history.

From Michaelis 1895 to Easter 1897 he worked as a scholarship holder of the German Archaeological Institute and the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Italy and Greece . After a short time with the philologist and archaeologist Karl Dilthey at the University of Göttingen, he began the career of high school teacher. He completed the seminar and probationary year at the Kgl. Berger secondary school in Poznan . Until September 1, 1899 he was an assistant teacher in Gniezno . After taking part in the excavations in Milet for the Berlin Collection of Classical Antiquities , he became an assistant teacher in 1901 and a senior teacher in 1902 at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium (Posen) . From 1903 to 1910 he also gave lectures on archeology at the Royal Academy in Poznan . From April 1 to December 1, 1904, he toured the Thracian Islands to collect ancient inscriptions for the Royal Academy of Sciences. In 1906 he refused the reputation of the University of Greifswald on her chair from Classical Philology. In 1910 the Royal Academy in Poznan awarded him the title of professor.

On November 1, 1910, he was transferred to the Royal High School in Küstrin as director . In 1914 he returned to his hometown of Szczecin as director of the Marienstiftsgymnasium . In Stettin he also gave lectures at the adult education center founded in 1919 by Erwin Ackerknecht .

Given his interest in the history of Pomerania , he had been a board member since 1918, and from 1923 until his death chairman of the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology . Under his chairmanship, the society gave its ancient collection to the Provincial Association of Pomerania . The collection was reopened in 1928 as the Provincial Museum of Pomeranian Antiquities ; The director of the museum was Otto Kunkel , who until then had been the company's curator . Fredrich was also a board member of the Historical Commission for Pomerania .

Private

In 1904 he married Adelheid von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff (1881–1954), the second daughter of his doctoral father Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff . They had four children together. Her letters were published by her granddaughter Gertrud Wallis.
