Caro Niederer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caro Niederer (born April 29, 1963 in Zurich ) is a contemporary conceptual artist who lives and works in Zurich. Her work revolves around topics such as the media and cultural transferability of images and the relationship between art and life. Niederer works with various media, which she stages in an installation : techniques such as painting, photography, video, silk carpets that are hand-knotted in China, furniture objects, porcelain and glass objects, jewelery as well as wall wallpapers and editions. Along with Pipilotti Rist and Sylvie Fleury, Niederer is one of the most famous contemporary Swiss artists.

Artistic career

Caro Niederer's artistic career began in Zurich in the 1980s. In 1990 she spent several months in Cairo on a scholarship . There she also worked with textiles, among other things, and dealt with gender- related stereotypes from the very beginning of her artistic activity . After her stay in Egypt she traveled around the world with her then partner, the artist David Weiss . On her travels, Caro Niederer began to collect postcards, which then served as a template for small-format paintings. She later had these transferred to silk carpets in a Chinese factory. In the publication “ Public and Private Pictures” (1995) this practice of transfer is given an additional level. The large paintings she created later are also based on private photographs that she took on the road or in everyday situations.

These various forms of artistic expression also include the design of objects for domestic use - such as dishes or furniture. But video works are also part of her repertoire, for example in Conversations about Work (2004), where she explores the question of how women work and live in a female coffee house group.

The exchange with like-minded people, friends and fellow campaigners also repeatedly shapes their exhibition practice. In her retrospective Good Life Ceramics at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (2017/2018) she not only realized a long-planned café-bar project, but also created a presentation concept that changed steadily over the course of the exhibition. This enabled the various working methods and media to appear together. The most recent major museum exhibitions include the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (2017/2018), the CAC Málaga (2006), the Museum Haus Lange , Krefeld (2006), the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2005), the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham ( 2005) and the St. Gallen Art Museum (2004).
