history

The name of the place Castelnuovo dell'Abate (Eng. The town's church was first mentioned on February 11, 1333. The city walls were built by the Republic of Siena around 1360 . After the Abbey of Sant'Antimo was dissolved by Pope Pius II in 1462 , the place was subordinate to the Bishop of Montalcino. On June 2, 1777 the place became a district of Montalcino.
