Haralambos Holidis
Haralambos "Babis" Holidis ( Greek Χαράλαμπος Χολίδης Charálambos Cholídis , born October 1, 1956 in the Kazakh SSR , Soviet Union ; † June 26, 2019 ) was a Greek wrestler . He won a bronze medal in Greco-Roman style in bantamweight at the Olympic Games in 1984 and 1988 .
Career
Haralambos Holidis, nicknamed Babis (Μπάμπης), began wrestling as a teenager in 1969. His club was Atlas Kallitheas Athinai and his coach Parascus Boras. He wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style and was a member of the military during his active time.
At the age of 17 he began his international career in 1973, starting at the European Championships in Helsinki and the World Championships in Tehran . He started with paper weight, the weight class up to a body weight of 48 kg. In Helsinki he remained without a win and came in 11th place, while in Tehran he defeated the Spaniard Juan Gonzalez and the Tunisian Habib Dlimi and thus took a good 6th place.
Haralambos Holidis also won two paperweight wins at the 1974 European Championships in Madrid , with which he just missed a medal with fourth place. At the World Championships this year in Katowice he defeated u. a. the strong Hungarian Ferenc Seres , but failed on the Soviet athlete Vladimir Subkow and came in 7th place.
After a 6th place at the 1975 European Flyweight Championships in Ludwigshafen am Rhein and a 9th place at the 1975 World Cup in Minsk , he won his first flyweight medal at the 1976 European Championships in Leningrad . He defeated there with Nicu Gângă from Romania , Benni Ljungbeck from Sweden and Lajos Rácz from Hungary three world class wrestlers. He suffered defeats against Petar Kirov from Bulgaria and Vladimir Shatunov from the USSR . At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, however, he remained without a win and came in flyweight after defeats to Lajos Rácz and Bruce Thompson (USA) only on the 11th place.
The next good placement reached Haralambos Holidis at the 1977 World Cup in Gothenburg . There he came in 5th place with three wins. He lost against Kamil Fatkulin from the USSR and Nicu Gângă.
In 1978 he won his first medal at a world championship. In Mexico City he beat Lajos Rácz, Sumer Karadag from Turkey and others on the way to the bronze medal. Antonio Caltabiano from Italy , while he lost to Rolf Krauss from Germany and Krum Borisow from Bulgaria.
In the years 1979 to 1982 Haralambos Holidis placed himself mostly in the upper midfield at the international championships. Whereby he showed very good performances with places 5 and 6 at the World Championships in Oslo in 1981 and in Katowice in 1982 . At the European Championships in 1983 he then won his next medal. In the meantime he switched to the bantamweight division and was runner- up in Budapest after beating the Soviet athlete Vasily Fomin in the semi-finals and defeating Emil Ivanov from Bulgaria in the final .
Haralambos Holidis then celebrated his greatest international success at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . He won there with four wins and one loss in the semifinals against Masaki Eto from Japan, the bronze medal in the bantamweight.
After an excellent 4th place at the 1985 World Cup in Kolbotn near Oslo , he was particularly successful again in 1986. He was runner-up again at the European Championships in Athens at home . He only had to admit defeat to the Soviet athlete Timurzyan Kalemulin in the final . At the World Championships that year in Budapest , he won the bronze medal in bantamweight. In the fight for this medal he defeated the Cuban Amadoris Gonzalez Labrada .
At the end of his very successful and long career, Haralambos Holidis then won an Olympic bronze medal again at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul in bantamweight with a victory in the decisive fight against the Chinese Yang Changling .
After these games, Haralambos Holidis ended his career, in which he won a total of seven medals in international championships, but never made it to the top podium. He took up the coaching profession and was later in Athens one of the coaches of the Greek national wrestling squadron in the Greco-Roman style.
