history

The settlement was first mentioned in documents in 1359 under the name Kyzigtew in the papal tithe lists . In the Middle Ages, the village appears in numerous Hungarian and later in Habsburg documents.

The advantageous location on the main Timișoara-Lugoj road had a positive effect on the economic development of Chizătău. The introduction of the railway between the two cities and the introduction of the narrow-gauge railway between Chizătău and Sanovita for transporting the basalt deposits of quarry Sanovita were other factors that had a positive impact on the economic development of the village.

administration

Until 1526 the settlement belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary . During the Ottoman rule (1526-1718) it belonged to the Vilâyet Timișoara. From 1718 to 1778 the village was part of the Habsburg crown domain Temescher Banat . In 1778 the Banat was awarded to the Kingdom of Hungary by Empress Maria Theresa . From 1849 to 1860 it was part of an independent crown land of the Voivodeship of Serbia and Temescher Banat . After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867), the Banat was annexed to the Kingdom of Hungary within the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary . The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the Banat being divided into three parts , whereby Chizătău fell to the Kingdom of Romania .

Until 1956 Chizătău was an independent municipality, since then Belinț has been the community center and administrative seat.

Peasant choir

At the beginning of the 19th century, Pastor Trifu Sepetian founded a peasant choir in Chizătău. Following his example, peasant choirs were founded in many neighboring and more distant Banat villages. The peasant choir from Chizătău often performed together with the Romanian Orthodox church choir from Lugoj as well as with German choirs, they took part in choir festivals and choir competitions together.

In 1882 the 25th anniversary of this choir was celebrated, for which many friendly Romanian and German choirs were invited. The well-known Bucovina- born composer Ciprian Porumbescu , who was a teacher in Kronstadt at the time, was invited as a member of the jury. After hearing the Romanian choirs from Lugoj, Chizătău and the other localities, he wrote enthusiastically in a letter in German to his sister:

“... can only tell you, it was something special! A very different people lives here than here, a people who take things seriously and holy as far as their mission and situation are concerned, and only stable and truthful things emerge from this, far removed from all the well-known Romanian fanfaronades. The choirs surprised me with their skills. The premiered choirs were so excellent that our choral society in Kronstadt is nothing wrong. "
