Count Christian Detlev Karl zu Rantzau , Danish Kristian Ditlev Karl Rantzau (born October 8, 1772 in Rastorf , † February 23, 1812 in Ascheberg ) was a German-Danish administrative lawyer, Chief President of Kiel and curator of the University of Kiel .

Life

Christian Detlev Karl zu Rantzau founded the house of Oppendorf of the Holstein nobility ( Equites Originarii ) Rantzau . He was the eldest son of Christian Emil zu Rantzau († 1777) on Gut Rastorf , who in 1774 acquired Gut Ascheberg from Schack Carl von Rantzau .

He studied law at the Universities of Kiel and Göttingen . In Göttingen in 1790 he was part of the students' exodus to the Kerstlingeröder field and one of their speakers. In 1794 he became chamberlain at the Danish court, in 1797 chamberlain and through the mediation of Ernst Heinrich von Schimmelmann supernumerary deputy at the General-Landes-Oekonomie- und Commerzcollegium in Copenhagen . In Copenhagen he befriended Johann Georg Rist .

He took over the Oppendorf , Schönhorst and Ascheberg estates , but sold Ascheberg as early as 1799 to buy a property near Copenhagen, which he kept until 1801. In 1798 he became a real deputy , at the same time a member of the Credit-Casse-Direction until 1800 . In 1802 he moved to the German Chancellery as second deputy and became first deputy here in 1804 .

in April 1809 he returned to Kiel as chief president. At the same time he was the successor to Fritz von Reventlow curator of the university.

Rantzau was, following his uncle Hans zu Rantzau , an early advocate of the abolition of serfdom in the duchies, and carried out the leasing on Ascheberg.

On September 17, 1795, he married Charlotte Ernestine, born in Regensburg . Freiin Diede zum Fürstenstein (born March 3, 1773 in London ; † May 30, 1846 in Kiel), the older daughter of the Danish ambassador Wilhelm Christoph Diede zum Fürstenstein (1732-1807) and Louise Diede zum Fürstenstein (1752-1803). The couple's children were the eldest son and heir to Oppendorf Christian Wilhelm Heinrich (1796–1848), the daughters Nancy (1798–1843), married to Christian zu Rantzau (1796–1857), Landdrost of the Duchy of Lauenburg, Louise / Luise (1799 –1852), married to Heinrich von Reventlow-Criminil , Fanny (1803–1823), their son Ernst (1802–1862) and the twins Cuno (1809–1843) and Otto (1809–1867).

After his early death, his widow lived with the children in the Seeburg on the Kiel Fjord and made them a social center of Kiel. The building was demolished in 1907 to make room for the later dormitory opposite the Kunsthalle Kiel .
