Christian Krumbholtz

Christian Krumbholtz (born November 11, 1662 in Neustadt (Saxony) , † December 5, 1725 in Hameln ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and chief pastor in Hamburg.

Life

Christian Krumbholtz attended the Pforta State School . He studied Protestant theology at the University of Leipzig , where in 1685, after a disputation chaired by Johannes Olearius (1639–1713), he became a Magister . In 1688 he received his first pastor as a preacher at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig . In the same year he became a deacon (2nd pastor) at the Lutheran Church in Pressburg , which he had to leave after eight years “because he incited the people against the authorities”; In 1696 he came to Dresden to the Sophienkirche . Here he made a name for himself through polemical anti-Catholic writings.

In 1700 he was elected to succeed Samuel Schultze as chief pastor at the Hamburg main church Sankt Petri . His introduction by the senior Johann Winckler took place on November 16, 1700. In 1701 he received the title of Lic. Theol from the University of Leipzig . and from the University of Kiel the Dr. theol.

In the massive and for years smoldering disputes in Hamburg over Pietism , which the Hamburg religious lapel of 1690 had not been able to resolve, Krumbholtz joined the strictly Lutheran-Orthodox party of the main pastor to St. Jakobi Johann Friedrich Mayer . When he went to Greifswald as a general superintendent and professor in 1701 , Krumbholtz became the leading figure in this direction. He was an excellent preacher, but also “a restless and contentious spirit” who sought ever greater influence in the debates of the citizenry. He did not shy away from bringing up the items to be negotiated in the pulpit and attacked the Senate , the civil colleges and the courts from here. This initially had journalistic consequences; it appeared satirical pamphlets, especially by Barthold enemy where Krumbholtz was strongly attacked. However, after his sermons and general dissatisfaction in the city led to tumults against the council, which Krumbholtz no longer recognized as an authority, an army of the Lower Saxony Reichskreis intervened in 1708 and restored Hamburg under imperial administration and the power of the council. Krumbholz was arrested on the night of June 4th to 5th, 1708. On July 11, 1708 he was removed from office. In a sensational trial that produced numerous pamphlets for and against Krumbholtz, sentenced to life imprisonment outside of Hamburg for incitement , he was taken to Hameln Fortress in 1711 after the verdict was confirmed by an imperial commission , where he remained until the end of his life.
