Christian Tschuggnall

Christian Tschuggnall  (* 1988 in Hall in Tirol ) is an Austrian jazz drummer and composer.

Career

Tschuggnall graduated from 2002 to 2008, a preparatory study at the  Tyrolean State Conservatory in professional percussion , while the Music High School Innsbruck went to school and where in 2007 the Matura completed. After completing his community service in Innsbruck, he studied for a year at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg with Udo Dahmen , Benni Greb and Jost Nickel from 2008–2009 . In 2009 he moved to Berlin to study at the University of the Arts Berlin , where he received the title Master of Music in 2015 with distinction in drums and composition as a major. His professors included John Hollenbeck , Greg Cohen , David Friedman , Volker Schlott and Kurt Rosenwinkel .

Activity as a drummer

Tschuggnall collaborated as a drummer with various artists and bands, including The Cinematic Orchestra , BluatschinkJoey Baron , Frittenbude , The Next Step , Jocelyn B. Smith , Wolfgang Fiedler , Sun Dew, Shackleton,  Robyn Schulkowsky , Jonathan Kluth, Percussive Mechanics , Magnetic Ghost Orchestra and Melt Trio .

During his studies at the Tyrolean State Conservatory, he won four first prize in the Austrian music competition Prima la musica in the field of classical percussion. At the age of 19 he already appeared as a solo drummer at the Night Of Percussion in Graz . In May 2012, he worked as a drummer on the DVD Manuscripts of Manu Delago with u. a. with the London Symphony Orchestra .

Activity as a composer

Campaign #klangberlins

Tschuggnall made an international name for himself as a composer with the #klangberlins branding campaign for the  Konzerthausorchester Berlin , published in 2017 , which went viral on the Internet shortly after its publication. The videos have been viewed over 3 million times worldwide. After well-known media from Berlin and Germany, international media such as Le Monde , Courrier international , the Japanese television NHK , the Argentine newspaper La Nación as well as Australian, American and British blogs also showed video clips from the #klangberlins series .

For the campaign, Tschuggnall wrote a score together with the composer Michael Edwards , with which classical instruments can imitate everyday noises from Berlin city life through extended playing techniques. Tschuggnall runs the music studio unheard in Berlin with Michael Edwards .

The campaign has been nominated and awarded several prizes, including the Golden Award of Montreux , the German Prize for Online Communication 2017 and the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Award .

Bands and projects

With his self-founded jazz and new age band Snooze-On , Tschuggnall released the debut album Snooze-On in 2013 . The second album Drawn followed in December 2014 . Another collaboration existed with the US keyboardist Liz Kosack , with whom Tschuggnall founded the duo project of synthesizer and drums Sunrise Over a Dystopic Future City (SOADFC) .

Christian Tschuggnall is also a founding member of the collective for composed and improvised music ( KIM ) in Berlin.

Other

Christian Tschuggnall is the brother of the pop singer Michael Tschuggnall , who was the winner of the ORF casting show Starmania in 2003 and also a participant in Dancing Stars .
