Jost Nickel (born March 6, 1970 in Berlin ) is a German drummer . He became known to a wide audience through his collaboration with Jan Delay .

education

Jost Nickel received classical piano lessons at the age of 8. At the age of eleven, he began playing the drums and formed his first band with his brother. From the age of 13, Nickel took lessons, first in his home town of Kiel, and later at the Music Station in Hamburg .

After graduating from school, Nickel decided to pursue a career as a professional musician during his community service and prepared for it through intensive practice. In 1991 he took part for the first time in a 10-week course with Zach Danziger at Drummer's Collective in New York City , which he repeated in 1996. In 1992, Jost Nickel took part in the pop course in Hamburg, where he met Udo Dahmen , who had a lasting influence on him as a teacher. Nickel then moved to Hamburg to advance his career.

Career

Jost Nickel became the drummer of the fusion band Matalex in 1994 , with whom he recorded a total of 3 records and played various tours. He left the group, in which improvisation played a major role, because this free play had lost its appeal for him. In addition, when Thomas D. joined the band as a singer, the original character of the previously purely instrumental music had changed.

In the 90s , after playing with Otto Waalkes for a while, Nickel also worked for various pop singers , including Tony Christie , Vicky Leandros and Howard Carpendale , in parallel with Matalex . He ended these engagements after he realized that the band's music had little importance in the recordings and concerts, and he saw no opportunity to get involved musically and develop further.

After an unsuccessful attempt to form a German-speaking rock trio, Jost Nickel initially played with Inga Rumpf . In the course of this engagement, he met the producer and singer Mark Smith , who offered him to work in Paris for various pop productions.

From 2002 Nickel played with the French singer Maxim Nucci . Through this work Nickel came into contact with many important artists, such as Thomas Washington , who had already worked as an arranger for Michael Jackson and Phil Collins , and Louis Jardim , who had played as a percussionist for Eric Clapton and Robbie Williams .

Nickel also worked for Jenifer Bartoli and recorded his first number one hit with the French casting show band Linkup in 2003 . During this time in Germany he could only be heard occasionally with Seeed .

In 2004, Nickel joined the live band of Mousse T. , who toured Germany with various singers, including Andrew Roachford and Omar . He later took over the post of " Musical Director " there.

In 2006 Jan Delay , who was about to release his second solo album Mercedes-Dance , presented his new live band Disko No. 1 together. Since the originally intended drummer could not convince in the rehearsals, the trombonist Johnny Johnsen suggested Jost Nickel as a replacement. After a short audition, Nickel was hired by Delay and has been an integral part of Disko No. 1, sometimes under the pseudonym J-Fresh . Together with Delay, Nickel also played big festivals like Rock am Ring . In 2007, the live album Mercedes-Dance Live was released with recordings of the tour. On the following Jan Delay album Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Soul , Jost Nickel was directly involved in the songwriting and recording.

Parallel to his work as a drummer, Jost Nickel also works as a lecturer. In addition to his own events, he teaches at the Baden-Württemberg Pop Academy in Mannheim, the Hamburg School of Music and the Hamburg Pop Course .
