Christian Vande Velde (born May 22, 1976 in Lemont , Illinois ) is a retired American cyclist . He took part in the Tour de France several times as an assistant to successful riders and placed in the top ten twice. At the end of his career he confessed to doping and was banned.
Career
Christian Vande Velde turned pro with the US Postal Service Pro Cycling Team in 1998 . In both 1999 and 2001, he helped as a part of this team Lance Armstrong to his seven two later because of doping but knew Tour de France -Siegen. During that time he was able to win his first stage race in 1999, the Redlands Bicycle Classics . In the years from 2003 to 2007 he supported his respective team captains as a noble helper. B. Carlos Sastre at Team CSC . The significant individual success during this time was winning the Tour of Luxembourg in 2006.
In 2008 Vande Velde switched to the Garmin-Cervélo team . There he conquered the Maglia Rosa on the team's first big tour, the Giro d'Italia 2008 , after the team had won the first stage, a team time trial. He also showed a strong performance at the Tour de France in the same year and finished fourth in the overall standings. He ended the season by winning the Tour of Missouri . In 2009 he finished the Tour de France in eighth place despite helping out for his captain Bradley Wiggins . The year 2010 was more than unfortunate for Vande Velde, as he had to give up both the Giro and the Tour early due to serious injuries from a fall, whereupon he wanted to end his career.
In the 2011 season, Vande Velde started instead of the previous years at the Giro d'Italia in the California Tour , which he finished in fourth place. In the 2011 Tour de France , Vande Velde supported Thomas Danielson after losing a lot of time due to a fall. Danielson finished eighth and the team won the team championship . Vande Velde took 17th place overall.
Vande Velde was banned from the US anti-doping agency USADA for six months after a confession because of his involvement in the doping system of the US Postal team , and his results were from April 4, 2004 until April 30 Revoked in 2006. He accepted the decision.
At the end of the 2013 season, Vande Velde ended his career as a professional cyclist after finishing the Giro d'Italia in 110th place and giving up the Tour de France on the 7th stage after a fall.
